They Live Inside Us

Because something haunts us all.  That’s why They Live Inside Us matters this Halloween season.  Independently made and clever with its use of twists and turns, this horror film - inspired by the success of The Witching Season - is definitely a “must see” as the creativity, the practical effects, and the scares are executed in a manner which suggests that Writer/Director Michael Ballif (who also filmed, co-wrote, and edited) and co-writer/actor James Morris know EXACTLY what they are doing when it comes to producing cinematic fear.

In a beautifully photographed three-minute opening, They Live Inside Us invites viewers to the leaf-crunching goodness of Small Town, USA during the mild month of October.  You can almost smell the harvest in the air as a couple of kids, wearing Halloween masks, bike through what appears to be a small town.  They eventually stop at what they believe to be a “cursed” house, full of witches and ghosts.  And, truly, the Boothe House does look like it could contain a multitude of startling creatures within its walls.

This well-paced opening, building up a solid atmosphere for this spooky tale to later capitalize on, firmly establishes a great backdrop for the terror to come!  You see, the stories of Mr. Boothe and what happened within the haunted walls of this mysterious house are as long as the storm clouds gathering above as one of the two boys, with lightning flashing across the evening sky, dares to creep onto the porch and peer inside.

He is quickly scared off by a specter staring back at the boys and it is into a solid mass of night that they ferociously pedal off into.  I imagine - confronted with what lurks in this house - we would all be doing the same and, for those brave enough to keep watching, They Live Inside Us gives us ample reasons to do EXACTLY that. They Live Inside Us

But there is so much more to these haunted walls, too.

They Live Inside Us quickly introduces Jake (James Morris, I Don’t Speak English, The Witching Season), a troubled screenwriter who has come to live in the Boothe house, and his young daughter (Emily Broschinsky, Fleet) as they begin their residence here.  Thanks to some awesome cinematography, it is with a simple turn of a doorknob that we know something is up with their relationship and with Jack’s interest for living in the house.  There is tragic history between them and, soon, his latest screenplay, is going to swallow both of their souls. He's suffering from Writer's Block and has hopes that living inside the house will shake the creativity loose.

But these rooms have many secrets . . .

Co-starring Stevie Dust (Riot) and Hailey Nebeker (Nocturne), They Live Inside Us is now streaming on Apple/iTunes, Prime Video, Google Play, Vudu, Microsoft Video, Rebox on Demand, Vimeo, Youtube Premium, and select cable providers.  Check it out and let the real reason for the Halloween season to wash over you.

After all, every house has a story to share.
