Hang onto your cowboy hats, animation fans everywhere, because the SilverHawks are finally out on DVD. This fantastic set is a classic trek through the animation styles of yesteryear or, if memory serves me correctly, the year 1986. Created by the same production team behind ThunderCats (which includes the same voice talents, too), SilverHawks tackles the space age (in the 29th century) by sending its heroes into series after series of epic space battles as they fight Public Enemy #1: Mon*Star and his motley crew of villains in the Galaxy of Limbo. It seems that our five crime fighters, led by Quicksilver, volunteered their bodies to become "partly real, partly steel" in order to fight super crime bosses and minor alien criminals throughout the galaxy. These heroes, which are led by Quicksilver (and his bird TallyHawk), include the brother and sister team of Steelwill and Steelheart, Colonel Bluegrass (who pilots the jet Maraj and carries a super-sweet crime-fighting guitar), and the youngster Copper Kidd, who speaks in computer tones (sounding eerily like a Daft Punk song) and electronic whistles.
The plots of the episodes in this set are fairly straightforward and the first two episodes do a pretty quick job of introducing viewers to this universe by concentrating on storylines while showcasing the flashy appeal of the SilverHawks. I mean, let's not kid ourselves here, the show was created to sell action figures to the all the young boys of the 1980's when toys for boys (G.I. Joe, Transformers, He-Man) were selling like crazy. And who can blame them? Come on, who wouldn't want to play with toys that were all shiny steel-like and had wings that form with a cool swooshing sound when you extend their arms?!!
But let's leave the toys out of this because the stories are indeed fun and, as an added bonus, the entire set is a supremely cool science fiction geek out festival of sorts. Really. Some of the episodes are straight forward classics - no doubt about it - and some of them fall flat, but one thing is certain: you can count on all of them to end with a Bluegrass's science lessons directed at Copper Kidd. How unbelievably sweet is that?
The animation is of the same standards that ThunderCats achieved, so there's no real complaints there. The colors are bright and the sound, well, let's face it, the opportunity to hear the SilverHawks theme song in surround sound just rocks. Really. Ultimately, the chance to revisit the series as an appreciative adult is not to be missed. My only real beef with the set is that there weren't many episodes made of SilverHawks (a total of 65) and to split it into 2 separate sets seems, well, a bit much... but the first 32 cartoons are excellent... if any amount of realism in your entertainment is not a concern of yours. My final thought on this set is a simple one: with this set and an assumed second set in the works, can Hollywood be far behind in resurrecting the SilverHawks as a major motion picture? Me thinks not...
