Nurse Jill (2016) - Blu-ray

Because sometimes the thought of revenge is stronger medicine than actually doing it.  Sometimes.

The 16mm footage.  The dialogue cards.  The city atmospheres.  Everything about Nurse Jill, including its smaller than small budget SCREAMS giallo.  Yet, this film – photographed by Joe Rubin, one of the co-founders of Vinegar Syndrome, and written and directed by Peter Romeo Lambert (Dead American Woman) – is wholly American.

With a strong score from composer Jay Byrne to go along with its grisly images, Nurse Jill is an unshakable experience for any fan of cult cinema.  This is a strange tale and it begins with the day to day happening of one woman, Nurse Jill Danvers (Heather Marie Vernon), as she attempts to move on from divorcing her husband.  It won't be easy for her; there will be several missteps along the way.

"It is a film that will haunt you in your most reflective moments."

We see her rise; we see her walk the streets; we see her at her appointments; and then we see her stab a knife right into someone’s eye.  The gore is strong with this one, folks.  So, too is the full frontal gazes at male and female flesh.  Nurse Jill, dipping its toes into the surreal for an unforgettable middle section, dares to go to the very edge of sanity itself.

Because Nurse Jill can’t escape the sad fate that is about to befall her.  Unfortunately, there are strange people around her who won’t let her truly escape the prison of the past.  First, it is the interesting woman on the subway, then it is the masked man with the wide grin, and then, because she is already on edge, it is her own fatal actions.

Nurse Jill, after a bizarre abduction in the woods, is soon faced with a whole lot of penis in her face.  She is kidnapped and held in the grotesque clutches of a family of weirdos.  Beaten, sliced, and diced, she is beyond recognizable.  Even her blonde wig is gone.  But where is she?  She has no idea and the strange family, masturbating over her while she sleeps, aren’t going to help her figure it out . . . until it is far too late. Nurse Jill (2016) - Blu-ray

But the bizarre world of Nurse Jill is only starting.  Things get a bit more twisted upon her release.  The memories of the traumatic event are brought to a new reality thanks to the serial rapist in the building.  Jesus, this poor woman can’t catch a break.  No wonder she freaks the fuck out in her journey toward separation.

With stunning locations and a true grindhouse flavor that never fails to create tension, Nurse Jill is not a movie for everyone.  You HAVE TO BE true believers in the grimiest of the grime when it comes to cult cinema; the naughtiest of the naughty, and – as we get up close and personal with all sorts of flesh and images – never look away from the film.  Don’t even flinch.

Nurse Jill is now on blu-ray courtesy of Massacre Video.  It is a film that will haunt you in your most reflective moments.  Silent grindhouse horror?  There aren’t many things more beautiful than that.  And, trust me, Nurse Jill, with its shocking climax, is right up there offering just a mild sedative so that you can . . . relax.

Massacre Video presents Nurse Jill on blu-ray with a strong HD transfer.  Presented with a widescreen 1.66:1 aspect ratio, the grain is high.  Yes, this film is murky.  Yes, this film is purposefully scrubbed clean of its details.  It is an ugly-looking film, meant to look like it is right from the 1970s, but that is to be expected.  The film wants to be sitting on a shelf right alongside The Swinging Barmaids and other exploitation flicks.  Expect the scuzz and the sleaze.  Expect the redemption, too.  Black levels are strong and a yellow tint completes the look of the film, too.  The soundtrack is presented in a crisp LPCM 2.0 audio track.
