Jurassic World: 5-Movie Collection

It’s time to go back . . . back to the park.

With the arrival of Jurassic World: Dominion imminent in early June, re-visiting the world that Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park has created is a no-brainer and what better way to do it than in Ultra HD?!  Thankfully, Universal has provided fans with all five films in one budget-friendly EPIC release!

"If this release doesn’t get you excited for director Colin Trevorrow’s concluding entry, Jurassic World: Dominion, then nothing else will"

Jurassic World: 5-Movie Collection is quite a package.  Featuring Jurassic Park; The Lost World: Jurassic Park; Jurassic Park III; Jurassic World, and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, this 10-disc box set of all five movies features every film in the Jurassic Park franchise, exploring the wide-ranging fallout that occurs when scientists find a way to revive long-extinct dinosaurs. Oh, the carnage!

So, what's inside?!

Experience one of the biggest films in motion picture history with director Steven Spielberg’s ultimate thrill ride, Jurassic Park. Featuring visual effects and groundbreaking filmmaking that has been hailed as an absolute triumph, this epic film is sheer movie-making magic that was 65 million years in the making. Jurassic Park takes you to an amazing theme park on a remote island where dinosaurs once again roam the earth and five people must battle to survive among the prehistoric predators. Starring Sam Neill, Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum and Richard Attenborough, Jurassic Park is now considered a classic Spielberg film and for a damn good reason!

While The Lost World: Jurassic Park has its fair share of criticism out there, it has been trending up among fans.  And for good reason as Spielberg takes us back to the scene of the original with even more dinosaurs, action and thrills. Four years after the disaster at Jurassic Park, two groups are in a race against time that will determine the fate of the remote island’s prehistoric inhabitants. Featuring an all-star cast including Jeff Goldblum, Julianne Moore, Vince Vaughn and Pete Postlethwaite, the sequel to the original blockbuster demands a second opinion.Jurassic World: 5-Movie Collection

And the second opinion ought to be extended to director Joe Johnston’s Jurassic Park III, in which man is up against dangerous predators in the ultimate battle for survival!  Adventure runs wild when renowned paleontologist Dr. Alan Grant (Sam Neill) agrees to accompany a wealthy couple (William H. Macy and Téa Leoni) on an aerial tour of Isla Sorna, InGen’s former breeding ground for prehistoric creatures. After they are stranded, Dr. Grant soon discovers that his hosts are not what they seem and the island’s native inhabitants are smarter, faster, fiercer and more brutal than he ever imagined!  I defended this movie when it originally came out and I still stand by its side.  It's a rollercoaster of never-ending thrills!

With those three films, the park might have run its course but, as time was on their side, the wildlife came roaring back with a vengeance thanks to 2015’s updated take on the themes Spielberg originally set forth.  Now, thanks to the passage of time, the park is bigger and bolder and is reintroduced to all as a family resort!   The Jurassic World theme park lets guests experience the thrill of witnessing actual dinosaurs, but something ferocious lurks behind the park's attractions – a genetically modified dinosaur with savage capabilities. When the massive creature escapes, chaos erupts across the island. Now it's up to Owen (Chris Pratt) and Claire (Bryce Dallas Howard) to save the park’s tourists from an all-out prehistoric assault.

While Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom attempts to shine a brighter light on some of the darker events of the previous entry, the fifth movie in the franchise is still a bleak and bloated one.  It's been three years since the theme park and luxury resort, Jurassic World was destroyed by dinosaurs out of containment. Isla Nublar now sits abandoned by humans while the surviving dinosaurs fend for themselves in the jungles. When the island's dormant volcano begins roaring to life, Owen (Chris Pratt) and Claire (Bryce Dallas Howard) mount a campaign to rescue the remaining dinosaurs from this extinction-level event.

If this release doesn’t get you excited for director Colin Trevorrow’s concluding entry, Jurassic World: Dominion, then nothing else will.  With punched up 4K mastering, ultra-clarity, and a thundering soundtrack thanks to the expansive range of the English DTS:X surround tracks, the call of the wild is strong with this one. Jurassic World: 5-Movie Collection

Jurassic World’s dinosaurs, a nice mix of animatronics and CGI, look better than they ever have in these flicks thanks to new technologies and the efforts of VFX supervisor Tim Alexander. It’s a sequel so the number of dinosaurs on parade is quite insane and the picture handles them all well enough to effectively sell their upgraded monsters to the popcorn-munching masses. No real complaints there.

Unfortunately, Fallen Kingdom’s “poke fun or pleasure the audience” approach to the blockbuster formula sells thrill and terror fair enough but doesn’t fully take advantage of its many opportunities to be completely fresh. A lot of the Jurassic World movies feel like mimicry. While Trevorrow is good with dropping nods to the original film, his own action sequences aren’t sharp enough to keep the satire introduced in the beginning fueled enough to escape ridicule as the movie settles into itself as just another sequel.  And Fallen Kingdom is completely over-the-top.

I can rattle on that bigger does not make better, but these films - in spite of their repetitive natures - are pure popcorn munchers and, truthfully, there’s no harm in what they offer audiences, as long as you turn your brains completely off.

Man’s reign is over, after all.  It’s their world now.

Video:

With varying aspect ratios, Universal has upscaled to the best of their 4K abilities at present.  The results are pretty strong thanks to their clean images, their thick blacks, and a CGI aspect that is only just a bit gamey in the original flicks.  Throughout all films, Universal has very sharp looking textures on its hands. The details ripple throughout the 1080p presentations and are appreciated, whether it be in costumes, foliage, or dino designs. Colors are bold. Textures are detailed. The dinosaurs are replicated with a quality level of detail that is a continual sense of wonder. Black levels are solid and offer a great deal of depth to the overall picture. Fleshtones are saturated nicely and natural blues and greens dominate the color palette.

Audio:

The English: DTS:X mastering and DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 soundtracks are indeed a triumph of sound.  Turn them up and hear that bass with each thump of a t-rex gaining momentum on you!  The dialogue is never lost and, thanks to all the creatures, the hills are indeed alive . . . with the sound of violence!
