Spare Parts (2020)

Recycled!  Repurposed!  These riot girls RULE the battleground known as the GridIron!

Opening with a very brief scene involving the collection of freshly sawed off limbs and then a much longer all girl punk rock band beatdown, Spare Parts welcomes us all back to the bloody arena of the GRINDHOUSE cinema with this nasty slick of rock ‘em, shlock ‘em glee!

"If Spare Parts sounds ridiculous and over-the-top, well, that’s because it is.  It’s damned entertaining, too,"

Spare Parts, courtesy of RLJE Films, is about a band by the name of Ms. 45 (awesome name drop!!) whose performance in a biker bar turns ugly real fast.  They kick ass, of course, but there are unforeseen consequences involving an overeager fan who definitely wants to play around with them some more . . . well, at least their hands and legs and an epic battle for their freedom!

If Spare Parts, written and directed by Andrew Thomas Hunt, sounds ridiculous and over-the-top, well, that’s because it is.  It’s damned entertaining, too, as Emma (Emily Alatalo), Amy (Michelle Argyris), Cassy (Kiriana Stanton), and Jill (Chelsea Muirhead) - who righteously kicked a lot of ass on stage - become weaponized and must battle to the death in a junkyard arena for the mysterious emperor (Julian Richings).

With no one to trust, the girls find themselves outnumbered and quickly customized thanks to 30-acres of, you guessed it, spare parts.  Now, instead of playing for large and violent audiences in dive bars around America, they are playing one of the bloodiest arenas ever but the instruments they are playing are their own mechanical and quite deadly limbs!  Spare Parts (2020)

And it is all to appease the Gods!  Whose Gods is never mentioned, but - once the training montage, the bloody battles and the chanting begins - you aren’t going to care until it is all said and done.  Co-starring Ryan Alleb as Driller, Spare Parts is one hell of a wild ride through the GridIron!

Written by Svet Rouskov (The Colony) and David Murdoch, Spare Parts is a whole lot of stupid fun as limbs are replaced with weapons.  It’s Cherry in Planet Terror territory for sure, but that’s part of the thrill as these chicks get their Ash on thanks to a twisted arsenal of weapons.  Let the battle begin!

With kickass choreography and some great chrome dome set designs courtesy of cinematographer Pasha Patriki and production designer Vincent Moskowec, Spare Parts is a solid offering of low budget thrills and spills.  It might be full of an expected storyline and some basic characters, but the performances are on point and so is the execution.  Spare Parts is relentlessly exciting and full of some great sequences in and out of the arena - even if it is a bit of a letdown in the nudity department.

Spare Parts is now on blu-ray thanks to RLJE Films.

In a godforsaken bar in the middle of nowhere, an all-girl band – Ms. 45 – rips the stage apart with their punk spirit. But their performance impresses an enthusiastic fan who lures the girls into a trap, sedates them, and starts...customizing them. Slowly they begin to gain consciousness and, in total shock, realize their arms have all been replaced with axes and chainsaws to fight gladiator-style in a junkyard arena owned by a sadistic "emperor," forcing them into the battle of their lives with one prize in mind – their freedom.  Andrew Thomas Hunt's sci-fi action thriller Spare Parts, starring Julian Richings, Michelle Argyris, Emily Alatalo, Kiriana Stanton, and Chelsea Muirhead arrives on blu-ray thanks to RLJE Films.

Video:

The blu-ray release from RLJE Films presents a rich-looking AVC encoded 1080p transfer in 2.35:1. The image is crystal clear with sharp, pinpoint details and no major technical flaws. The cinematography is often bathed in blue or red light so flesh tones are expectantly a little pale but fit in with the rest of the transfer. Black levels are of a high quality with nice lines, thick even in the shadows of the bar.  Colors absolutely pop in this cult title and the neon lights - strong in blues and reddish pinks - are strong throughout.

Audio:

The release also features a pounding DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 audio track. Music is strong and smooth, with a powerfully natural and dominant presence. Big, heavy violence often rule the day, with gunfight and explosions throughout while the ambient effects are somewhat limited but nevertheless engaging.
