I Spit on Your Grave: Deja Vu (2019) - Blu-ray

The horror of that fateful day in 1978’s I Spit on Your Grave returns thanks to writer/director  Meir Zarchi,  He did the first film, remember?  In fact, the one and only Camille Keaton as Jennifer Hills is also back doing what she does best: getting revenge.  This time, though, the stakes are higher as she – making millions off of the incident in which she was raped and got revenge on the men responsible – and her daughter, Jamie Bernadette as Christy Hills have been kidnapped by the last living relatives of the men she killed.

And they aren’t happy with her success because, to them, their fellows did absolutely nothing wrong.  SHE seduced them, after all.  The day they have been praying for, though, arrives as this movie – after reminding us what happened in the original film – begins with more scenes of graphic brutality and extreme terror.  Soon enough, this gang of backwoods hillbillies have Jennifer digging her own grave in their thirst to bury the woman responsible for the deaths of their loved ones.

"Fans of the original film will not be let down."

She’s still got the moves, though.  Tables are turned and her hanging turns into a free-spirited romp through the woods . . again.  This time, though, she has her daughter to look after.  Will history repeat itself?  That’s the basic story at the heart of this sequel.  It’s violent, crushing, and full of much piss and vinegar.  It is also pretty entertaining, making the most out of its location and its gore.

Fans of the original film will not be let down. There is much craziness along the roads back to civilization.  Whether it be crazed women on bikes down a dirt road or drunk hicks on their way to buy a load of horse shit.  I Spit on Your Grave Déjà vu eventually sees the women beating the tar out of those who have kidnapped them.  Whether it be by stick or rock, these two women aren’t backing away on the idea of revenge. {googleads}

The callbacks to the original are important, though, and they happen at significant times in the movie.  The community at the heart of this flick has grown to hate Jennifer.  The call her Satan’s messenger and no one is interested in her survival.  In fact, the length they go to celebrate her hunting is damn haunting in and of itself.

If chase sequences on a four-wheeler in a graveyard don’t get your juices flowing, there are plenty of other twisted things happening.  The tension is high and, admittedly, the entire production is just south of wrong and, yeah, people are going to die and wild howling will commence; that’s how bloodthirsty these backwoods heathens are.

I am guessing that you know what is going to happen.  We have an old victim and a young victim; one will have to carry on the legacy of warm-blooded, sexually-charged revenge.  But will it work a second time? I Spit on Your Grave: Deja Vu (2019) - Blu-ray

Originally filmed in 2014 (in and around Santa Clarita Valley), this official sequel to the original film might feel a little familiar and way too long, but it doesn’t suck.  That’s a good thing, too.  It’s just, as is the original, really raw and difficult to watch at some turns.

Co-starring Maria Olsen as Becky and Jim Tavare as Herman, this film finally has found a way to be seen thanks to this blu-ray release from Zarchi’s own company.

This Blu-ray Direct Disc supports a strong transfer from a digitally shot film.  The textures and the details are STRONG with this release.  Framed in an aspect ratio of 2.39:1 and including a kick-ass 5.1 mix, there’s little room for improvement on the visual punch of the film.  It looks fantastic and the black levels go deep.  The details in the woods surrounding the women are crackling with fine detail and so too are the colors, keeping their shape thanks to some consistent edges.  Shadows are defined and expressive with layers.  Overall, a solid release.
