Edge of Tomorrow - Movie Review

{googleAds}

4 stars

Based on the Japanese novel "All You Need Is Kill," in which an ill-prepared recruit dies in his first battle over and over again, Doug Liman's Edge of Tomorrow is the type of action-oriented science fiction needed to kick off the 2014 summer season. The film combines the zippiness of Starship Troopers with claustrophobia of Groundhog Day in a way that is both fun and frenetic. And due to this energy it doesn't remind me too much of Source Code which was a big worry.

Tom Cruise, once again stealing summer with a performance that is as charismatic as it is physically demanding for this 51-year-old, seriously does no wrong as the clumsy Maj. William Cage who survives only by the repeated "training" of the unpitying star soldier Rita (Emily Blunt) who kicks his ass into shape. In the beginning of the film, he doesn't even know how to operate his basic weapons and flops about like a fish out of water as an invincible alien race known as "Mimics" raises all sorts of hell around him.

The front lines of earth's most dangerous battle will never be the same...if Cage can survive them. He doesn't. That's right, Cruise dies ... over and over again ... (which should be welcomed by anyone who can't stand the man) and "wakes" from each death having to relive the same day; same battle; same training until something snaps within him...with a little help from Rita and a scientist (Noah Taylor), who explains the new rules to the whole resurrection game he's playing .

The brain-twisting science fiction screenplay was adapted by Christopher McQuarrie, who knows a good mystery (The Usual Suspects anyone?) when he sniffs one out, and whipped into linear shape by the fancy non-repetitive editing of James Herbert and Laura Jennings. Nothing about Edge of Tomorrow feels tired. This is a refreshing take on some really good science fiction and does Warner Bros proud because it actually trains its audience in how to view the film.

You have to think. You have to get involved. You have to forgive the writers for cramming in an undercooked love story as Rita's tough side softens to Cage's charisma. Easy enough to do in a story this action-packed and radioactive as the Mimics splatter their gushy blood everywhere. This summer the "Choose Your Own Adventure" novel from our younger and wiser days comes to the big screen in Edge of Tomorrow.

Be prepared to reboot in this summer's must-see Science Fiction movie.
