Tom Holland’s 1985 vampire in your neighbourhood jaunt was a really enjoyable, of its time, funny and scary composite of a movie. It has a cult following, and in many people’s eyes, is a classic from a very fertile and brave era of filmmaking. A sequel followed a few years later and then like many films of that era things went quite until the era of remaking absolutely anything Hollywood thinks will make them a quick buck on brand name recognition.

We had a remake to the original only two years. It sucked. It was filled with an A-list cast, was written by a well-respected writer who has played with vampire lore before in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and it still was an unnecessary cash grab. So skip to this year, and what do they do? They tell you a direct to dvd sequel has been made for your pleasure! Guess what? They lied.

As if we in the world are all so retarded we don’t know what we’re watching, Hollywood has stopped to a new level of accountant-run filmmaking and marketing. Being aware we are all growing a little tired of the ‘re’ label, they want us to believe it’s a sequel. They have not, in fact, made a sequel to 2011’s Fright Night; they’ve remade the original… AGAIN.

This time out, Charlie Brewster, Evil Ed, and Amy (all played by new actors… again) are Americans travelling in Europe for school. When they meet their new professor Gerri Dandridge (see what that did there? Gerri’s a WOMAN! That’s right! A WOMAN!), Charlie discovers she may be a creature of the night. The kids turn to one Peter Vincent (played by another actor… again), this time an internet paranormal show host (inspired!) with a penchant for strippers. And if you’ve seen the other two Fright Nights, you know the rest of the story, because nothing bloody changes in this one… nothing. The dressing may be different, the faces new, but they’re not even trying with this one.

It’s really cynical filmmaking at its worse. The script is the worst lazy pile of derivative crud; the actors are more miss than hit; and what really stings is the cinematography, which looks great! The effects aren’t half bad either. Why didn’t they put that effort into something original? Forget redoing a movie five minutes after just failing at it and risk on something fresh! No, Fright Night is what people want, right? If it’s like this, no we don’t. Lazy insulting garbage, through and through.[/tab]

Absolutely fantastic looking movie that this reviewer assumes was shot digitally. The MPEG-4 AVC transfer has awesome contrast, bold and crisp colour timing, natural and supernatural flesh tones, deep blacks. Never has a turd looked so beautiful. Sound, accurately and impressively delivers every shitty line with its DTS-HD 5.1 mix. Rears get a workout, left to right is impressive—just a solid mix all the way. Extras, like the film, offer next to nothing. There’s a commentary and a whole 6 minutes featurette on Dracula.

  • Feature-length commentary track with Eduardo Rodriguez, Alison Rosenzweig, and Michael Gaeta.
