Deals and Rumors Report: Soderbergh; 20,000 Leagues; Tomb Raider

The Man from U.N.C.L.E.Although several The Man From U.N.C.L.E. adaptation attempts have come and gone through recent years, none was closer to coming to fruition than Steven Soderbergh's vision which was to begin taking shape in the form of a production schedule beginning in March of next year. But now, even this one appears to have been mothballed due to casting and budgetary disagreements. The Playlist is reporting that Warner and Soderbergh weren't able to come to an agreement over ether casting or budgeting for the globe-trotting spy film that was expected to launch a trilogy with Soderbergh at the helm. Expect Warner to announce in the coming days, a new director eager to bring the ready-to-go script to life. Stay tuned!

20,000 Leagues Under the SeaIt has been rumored that Se7en director David Fincher would take on the Captain Nemo story with a new, slightly darker and more sinister take on the classic Jules Verne adventure tale, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. While there's still no official word on whether the Girl With the Dragon Tattoo director will move from dragons to squids, but Deadline is reporting that the 20,000 Leagues script is getting a re-write from Kevin Walker who previously worked with Fincher on the creepy crime thriller, Se7en. Scott Z. Burns took the first crack at the script which is said to differ significantly from Disney's Oscar-winning take. The report of Walker's take-over may point to an eventual involvement behind the camera by David Fincher who will be finished with his Dragon Tattoo once it releases this Christmas.

Lara CroftA new script for the re-boot of the Tomb Raider franchise is reportedly finished and producer Peter Graham, while making recent PR rounds, has been dropping hints about the direction the franchise's rebirth may take. The Traffic, The Aviator and The Town producer says he's targeting the Lara Reboot somewhere between a theme-heavy drama and an action blockbuster. Here's what Graham had to say recently to when asked about his Tomb Raider reboot:

"It's something that, for me anyway, is different, you know rebooting a franchise that I didn't produce to begin with. But there’s something about her character and going back to her roots, and that’s what we’re doing with this. You’re actually gonna meet her before she has all her powers as Lara Croft. It’s more of a character study, but it’s a really fun, fun adventure story."

There's not a lot of meat in there, but it's probably fairly safe to say the story will be an attempt to explore Croft's origins. Now if we can just get word on who might depict the British archaeologist-adventurer behind the story. Can you say Olivia Wilde?
