Texas Frightmare Weekend is nearing

Day two of the Texas Frightmare Weekend began with the ever famous Zombie Walk.  Sponsored by Moxley Manor, the walk took its participants from Freeport Parkway by HWY 114 and straight on in to the front doors of Texas Frightmare.  While no zombies were killed (They’re dead already, remember?) during the morning walk, quite a few children were frightened to tears by the ghoulish make-up and creative uses of household items (such as blenders, banjos, and teddy bears) by participants.

The Hearse & Shock Rod Show took over the parking lot of the Sheraton and exposed some of the bones and inner workings of some pretty heinous-looking AND sounding vehicles…including Ekto-1.

Angus Scrimm kicked off the Q & A’s where he admitted the first Phantasm is still his favorite film.  He also delighted fans with the news that there is still “some life” left in his character, The Tall Man, but teased that he could say little else about the subject of there being another movie in the near future.  The next two hours were spent signing and posing for fans.

While James Hampton (Teen Wolf, The F Troop & more) hosted a panel on acting, Laid to Rest 2 clips were shown in the screening room followed by a meet-and-greet with Brian Austin Green, Thomas Dekker, Mimi Michaels, and Angelina Armani.

Malcolm McDowell (A Clockwork Orange, Halloween) was also in appearance and signed autographs, shook hands, and posed for pictures.

Robert Englund’s appearance was one of many celebratory highlights of the day.  Animated as ever, Englund joked with fans and press about the legacy of the horror genre and what lessons he’s learned over the years about fame and acting.  He also confirmed for the audience that he was indeed up for the role of Han Solo in Star Wars.  Bummed that he didn’t get it, he was “more than delighted” that his roommate at the time, Mark Hamill was cast as Luke Skywalker.  Of course, we know that his Hollywood star was eventually brightened by Galaxy of Terror and V before slipping on the knived gloves of everyone’s favorite nightmare creeper.

Yet, it was Roger Corman, famed director/producer/idea man of everything from Five Guns West to Star Crash and Sharktopus, who stole the Q & A show.  His stories, while brief, were full of typical Corman clarity and preciseness and touched on his passion for filmmaking and B-movie magic.  When the proceedings were turned over to the audience, Corman confirmed some of the production stories involving his antics on the set, admitted to being partial to The Little Shop of Horrors, and indicated that Pirahnaconda was on the way to the Syfy network – his new associative home for New Horizons.

Jason Eisener, director of Hobo with a Shotgun, followed with a Q & A session of his own.  Here he discussed the winning of the Grindhouse contest – sponsored by Robert Rodriguez - and the hiring of Rutger Hauer for the part of the Hobo, and revealed that the film would have its premiere in Dallas on May 30th at The Texas Theatre.

The rest of the night was spent with special screenings of Mutant Girls Squad, Boggy Creek (followed by a righteous Q & A with director Brian Jaynes), Doll Boy (with a Q & A session from director Billy Pon), and a midnight screening of Human Centipede with live commentary from director Tom Six and Dieter Laser.  No, they did not stitch their mouths to each other’s rectums…

…but they talked about it.

With the conclusion of the weekend looming, one would think the evening would wind itself down.  It did just the opposite.  Special SAW VIP ticket holders were given their golden tickets and partied it up with Costas Mandylor from the Saw series.

Whew.  What a second day!  Bring on the Sabbath Bloody Sabbath!!!
