Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness - Movie Review

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

It’s official! Marvel has its first horror film, and oh man…is it frightfully good!

Finally making his return to the superhero franchise after delivering the last installment of his famous Spider-Man trilogy fifteen years ago, it seems only appropriate that Marvel Studio’s inaugural horror picture is helmed by none other than Sam Raimi. And let me tell you…Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness has Raimi’s bloody fingerprints are ALL OVER it, bringing not only the scare but also the style.

"is a great return for Raimi, and it is a great addition to the MCU"

Dropping you straight into a multiverse chase scene, the film wastes no time getting the action started. There we meet both an alternate version of Dr. Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) and America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez) trying to evade a giant demon until the Strange we are familiar with wakes up, only to find out it was just an awful dream…or was it? Accidentally ending up in Strange’s universe, Chavez is saved by Strange and Wong – excuse me – Supreme Sorcerer Wong (Benedict Wong) from a giant demon that bares the markings of ancient runes – runes of witchcraft. Who, by chance, would Dr. Strange know that might be familiar with such things? Perhaps the heartbroken Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen). But in seeking out Wanda, he finds the Scarlet Witch instead, who, turns out, is the one who is after Chavez.

THIS is the moment where the film really starts, and the crazy, camp-filled horror of Raimi is in full swing. Blood, jump-scares, gruesome kills, a moment or two or body-horror, and even zombies – this movie takes pride in being unabashedly bonkers and that is precisely what makes the film so awesome. There is never a shortage of crazy camera movements or shots that will send chills down your spine. It is so drastically different and daring in style from other Marvel projects that it does not feel like any other movie in the MCU.Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

And after introducing her character way-back-when in 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron, it is so satisfying to see Olsen finally being able to go full Scarlet Witch, and she absolutely knocks it out of the park. Being terrifying, badass, and heartbreaking, Olsen’s commitment to the character’s insanity and tragic story is unmatched by any other performance in the film.

For all of those who have been eagerly waiting for Sam Raimi’s return, you will not be disappointed. While Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness does possess some Marvel predictabilities, they are knowingly inescapable and are easily forgiven. But in spite of that, it is a great return for Raimi, and it is a great addition to the MCU. With Marvel giving Raimi as much freedom as they did, this film has the feel of a good ol’ balls-to-the-wall horror film. I think many Marvel fans will relish in the departure of norm for the studio, but I also have a feeling that opinions might be a bit polarizing. (Oh, how I love a divisive film!)

Like it says in the title, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, is madness. Glorious…horror-filled madness that is just so much fun, and it is now playing in theaters everywhere!

5/5 stars
