Cleopatra Jones: Warner Archive Collection (1973) - Blu-ray Review

Cleopatra Jones: Warner Archive Collection

Beginning with an explosion which levels a poppy field, Cleopatra Jones is one bad mutha!  Drug trafficking is about to get the red light thanks to her blazing guns.

With an undefined beauty and a killer wardrobe, one wink from her eyes just might kill you dead!  She’s tough like Shaft, but her action is a whole lot deadlier AND quicker!  She’s teaching the do-gooders out there not to fear the criminals out there.  Take back the streets!

"packs a helluva punch"

That’s right, director Jack Starrett along with Tamara Dobson as Cleopatra Jones and Shelly Winters as Mother takes aim at Blaxploitation films and doubles down with a more exciting and competent entry as an undercover government agent uses her beauty as a cover to shut down drug channels in exotic places.

Make no mistake about it, Cleopatra Jones packs a helluva punch as Bernie Casey as Reuben Masters, her lover and owner of a home for recovering addicts, take on Mommy and her crooked cops while shutting down as many of her poppy suppliers as possible.  Cleopatra Jones: Warner Archive Collection

Save the jive for someone else, man.  Cleopatra Jones is here to stay.  Right on, Sweet Sister!  Explosive, loud, and not subtle in its use of comedy at all, Cleopatra Jones and its brass-filled funky score from J .J. Johnson, a noted jazz trombonist and composer, is like a martial arts kick to the face.  Cleopatra Jones IS ALL THAT AND MORE!

With a fun and over-the-top performance from Winters as the main baddie, Cleopatra Jones and her fully weaponized silver and black '73 Corvette Stingray know no limits!  From Watts to Turkey, she wants all the drugs out of the streets and she won’t take anything less than “HELL, YES!” for an answer.  Which is why she needs Reuben and his B & S House to stay open, in spite of all the attempts from Mommy and the cops to shut it down.

Co-starring Antonio Fargas as Doodlebug and Esther Rolle as Mrs. Johnson, Cleopatra Jones is now on blu-ray thanks to the Warner Archive Collection.

A Turkish poppy field is torched and a U.S. drug trafficker known as "Mommy" (Shelley Winters) is feeling pretty burned. She phones the local cops she owns and orders a retaliatory strike on an inner-city anti drug headquarters. Mommy's next call should be to 911. Because now she'll have to mess with Cleopatra Jones (Tamara Dobson). Mommy is relentless in her vendetta -- but Cleo responds with catlike karate stealth. (Bong So Hon, technical advisor on Billy Jack, supervised the karate sequences.) Doodlebug, Pickle, Snake and more of Mommy's offbeat stooges add glide to the story's stride. Their antics, Mommy's chortling sleaziness and Cleo's class shape the power and pizzazz of Cleopatra Jones.

Video:

The 1080p transfer, with a 2.35:1 aspect ratio, looks pretty decent.  Colors are bright enough and lines are clean.  The black levels are also consistent.  As we go from one desert locale to another, it should be noted that there is a lot of the natural word on display here.  You might even recognize some of the locales.  Yellows, browns, and specks of dust are dominant.  The female flesh is also supple, complete with pores and western-inspired close-ups.

Audio:

The sound is presented in a strong DTS-HD Master Audio Mono track.  The atmospheres might be flat, but the score is a funky delight.  You will be happy with the results.
