Star Wars Saga Banner

Star Wars Episode blu-rayWho knows if that boycott called for by the hardcore Star Wars fans did any good for those who had hoped to punish Lucas for his filthy molestation of a cinematic classic. If it did, it was minimal, because today Twentieth Century Fox said that the recently released Star Wars Saga is the single best selling blu-ray catalog title of all time with worldwide sales of one million copies. That total also includes 515,000 copies that were sold in North America alone… in the first week!

Numerous online campaigns popped up across the web hoping to stifle sales of the blu-ray collection which hit the market on September 16th. But there are either enough people who don't really care, or many of those who joined the boycott couldn't help themselves when the shiny new box hit retailers' shelves.

The controversy arose when LucasFilm announced some very contentious changes made in the 9-disc blu-ray release of Star Wars: The Complete Saga, including added dialogue, CGI touch-ups and some other digitalized alterations to the classic films. Many felt it was acceptable for George Lucas to make the changes because, after all they are his films, but that he crossed the line by not allowing unaltered versions to also be marketed, citing his own testimony before congress in 1988 where the director excoriated other filmmakers who "destroy works of art and our cultural heritage for profit" labeling them "barbarians" for doing so. They have a point, George. What's up with that?

Sounds like even 20th Century was surprised at the massive worldwide turnout to purchase the box set as LucasFilm's Kayleen Walters said "Once again our fan's enthusiasm to celebrate Stars Wars continues to amaze us." The Senior Director of Marketing for Lucasfilm went on to say, "Our goal was to deliver a premium product that they could enjoy with their family and friends and we are thrilled that they are enjoying it as much as we hoped they would."

The question now becomes, will those who had hoped to send a message by puckering their purse strings finally break down and pick up a copy of the $89 set adding further to the tarnished coffers, or are they steadfast enough in their stance to continue the holdout and settle for watching it from a bud's replica Jabba the Hut couch while munching on Hershey's Tonton Milk Duds?

The comprehensive collection includes the six movies with unparalleled high-definition picture and sound quality, and features numerous deleted, extended and alternate scenes, new documentaries and a cross-section of the countless Star Wars spoofs that have appeared in pop culture over the past three decades. Marking the first time ever that the full Saga is available in one complete collection, STAR WARS: THE COMPLETE SAGA ON BLU-RAY also features a coveted peek into the making of the Saga with vintage documentaries, audio commentaries, behind-the-scenes moments, interviews, prop and costume turnarounds, retrospectives and more.
