“I feel a presence. In the air. In the walls. It has found us."

Synopsis: Inspired by true events. On an isolated stretch of land 50 miles outside of San Francisco sits the most haunted house in the world. Built by Sarah Winchester, (Academy Award®-winner Helen Mirren) heiress to the Winchester fortune, it is a house that knows no end. Constructed in an incessant twenty-four hour a day, seven day a week mania for decades, it stands seven stories tall and contains hundreds of rooms. To the outsider it looks like a monstrous monument to a disturbed woman's madness. But Sarah is not building for herself, for her niece (Sarah Snook) or for the troubled Doctor Eric Price (Jason Clarke) whom she has summoned to the house. She is building a prison, an asylum for hundreds of vengeful ghosts, and the most terrifying among them have a score to settle with the Winchesters...

Winchester - First Trailer

The dead are restless in the Official Trailer from The Spierig Brothers' Winchester! Inspired by the true story of Sarah Winchester (Academy Award®-winner Helen Mirren), heiress to the Winchester fortune, who believes her family to be cursed and built the most haunted house in history to lay the vengeful spirits. The gothic thriller also stars Jason Clarke & Sarah Snook and opens in theaters everywhere Friday, February 2nd!

If you're not familiar with the real-life House of Winchester, you owe it to yourself to read up on it a bit. It's a truly fascinating story.

The Winchester Mystery House is a turn-of-the-century Queen Anne style mansion outside San Francisco in San Jose, California. At one time it was the residence of Sarah Winchester. Yes, THAT Winchester – William Winchester of gun and rifle fame. Upon her husband's death, Ms. Winchester took the $20 million fortune (that was a LOT of money back then) left behind by her husband and purchased an unfinished house in 1884 and began construction. At the behest off Ms. Winchester, carpenters worked night and day for years, eventually turning the house into a seven-story monstrosity with such oddities as trick doors that open to nowhere, windows that overlook other rooms, and stairways that lead to blank walls.

It is believed that she built the mansion in such a haphazard fashion as a way to fool and trick the ghosts and spirits of those killed by her husband's weapons. *Picture me drawing circles around my ears while making cuckoo clock noises.

Anyway, Winchester is loosely based on Sarah Winchester's (Helen Mirren) story and what is said to be the most haunted house in the world. While it is difficult to quantify that claim, what is certain is the number of horror movie tropes littered throughout the trailer that you can watch below – from blood dripping down walls, to children's voices singing in the background, to loud jump-scares and floating bodies, this thing appears to bring nothing new to table other than its infamous setting.
