Another Bad Weekend for Sequels as MEN IN BLACK and SHAFT Fail to Meet Expectations at Box Office

 Men in Black: International

For the second week in a row, it was a down weekend for sequels as Men in Black: International and Shaft both underperformed at the weekend box office. This follows a similar pattern to last weekend which saw both The Secret Life of Pets 2 and Dark Phoenix both fail to meet expectations.

Both MIB and Shaft were attempting to overcome bad reviews over at Rotten Tomatoes but neither one was able to break the spell, especially Warner/New Line's Shaft revisit which was expecting a $20 million haul but barely brought in $8 million.

In addition, the overall weekend totals were down from the same weekend a year ago when The Incredibles 2 set the box office afire with a whopping $182 million in receipts.

Men in Black International was able to come out on top of the charts with a $28 million total, knocking the family-friendly The Secret Life of Pets 2 into second place with a $23.8 million take which brings the film's two-week total to $92 million. Closely behind was Disney's live-action remake of Aladdin which holds onto the third spot by bringing in $16.7 million.

Rounding out the top five were the the X-men film Dark Phoenix which topped $9 million over the weekend and was enough to beat out the Elton John biopic Rocketman which which held on to the fifth spot and added nearly $9 million to its three week total of just over $66 million.

The Samuel L. Jackson-led Shaft sequel managed to bring in only $8.3 million which was just a fraction of its expectation leading up to its release. Coming in seventh with just over $8 million was Godzilla: King of the Monsters followed by five-week holdout John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum with a $6.1 million weekend.

Rounding out the top ten were the comedy-drama Late Night which did $5.1 million over the weekend while Octavia Spencer's Ma brought in another $3.6 million to finish in tenth place.
