spider man into spider verse

We know the holiday season has officially begun when movie studios flood the cinemas with their tent pole blockbusters. And that is exactly what happened this week as three new releases were released after several weeks that saw little to no new releases willing to take advantage of the lack of competition.

The big winner – and we do mean big – was the animated super-hero film Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse which not only grabbed the top spot a this weekend's box office, but set a record as well with a $35.4 million take which makes the film the biggest animated December opening of all time.

Another new film making some noise is the Clint Eastwood-starred The Mule which debuted in the number two slot with just over $17 million. {googleads}

Holdover Dr. Seuss' The Grinch drops only one slot to number three as it continued to perform nicely with an $11.5 haul which brings its six-week total to a whopping $240 million, while the recent three-time box office champion Ralph Breaks the Internet drops three spots to finish in fourth this week with just under $9 million.

Rounding out the top five was another film making its debut this week. Christian Rivers' post-apocalyptic adventure film Mortal Engines, bowed to a scant $7.5 million take which is particularly disappointing since the film cost upwards of $100 million to make. Sadly, even Peter Jackson's attachment (he produced the film) couldn't save this one.

Next was Creed II slugging its way to the $5 million mark which brings its seven-week total to over $100 million while the Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody continues to ride its fame to bring in over $4 million and a seventh place finish.The Mule

The Mark Wahlberg family comedy Instant Family continues to perform well and brought in nearly $4 million to finish eighth and bring its eight-week total to $60 million. Not bad for the little feel-good comedy that could.

Rounding out the top ten box office this week of December 14-16 are the Potter-verse fantasy Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald and the feel good period drama Green Book which brought in $3.6 million and $2.8 million respectively.
