Venom

It appears that the huge critical reception and thrust of fan anticipation for Damien Chazelle's First Man weren't enough to slow down the Marvel train as Tom Hardy's portrayal of Eddie Brock in Venom once again takes the top spot at the weekend box office.

As expected, Venom experienced a significant drop-off this week falling 55% from its opening weekend but still managed a healthy $35.7 million to surpass not only Ryan Gosling's space adventure First Man, but also Bradley Cooper's A Star is Born as well. The third remake of the music rags-to-riches tale dropped just 34% this week, earning $28 million, which puts it in second place ahead of First Man. {googleads}

First Man pulled in $16.5 million in its opening weekend. That is is a bit disappointing as it was tracking for a $20 million haul. Certainly the studio was expecting more interest. Are people just no longer interested in space stuff? Have the stars of Ryan Gosling, and Damien Chazelle (La La Land) lost some sparkle. Are the two no longer big enough names to put butts in the seats? Regardless, we will continue to hear a lot about the prestige picture as the Oscar season rolls along.

A Star is Born

Another film making its debut this weekend was Ari Sandel's family-friendly tale Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween which placed fourth, just a mere $275,000 behind First Man with $16,225,000 in its debut. Rounding out the top five is the animated Smallfoot, which brought in $9.3 million in its third week of release.

Kevin Hart and Tiffany Haddish's Night School continues to track well as it placed sixth with $8 million followed by the debut of the ensemble feature Bad Times at the El Royale, which tallied $7.22 million in its opening. Jack Black's The House With the Clock in its Walls drops three slots to number eight with just under $4 million in its fifth week of release followed by The Hate U Give in ninth place with a $1.7 million weekend. A Simple Favor rounds out the top ten with $1.3 million, to bring its total haul to just over $52 million.
