Glass

For a weekend that expected big things from M. Night Shyamalan at the box office, there weren't too many twists. The filmmaker's latest film Glass – the much-anticipated culmination of the Unbreakable trilogy – went to lofty heights to finish in the top spot with a $40 million haul.

In spite of its dominating performance, the film failed to reach expectations as bad reviews tamped down the total a bit as the film was expected to bring in upwards for $47 million +. The film currently sits with a 37% approval rating from critics at Rottentomatoes.com.

Falling from the top spot was the Kevin Hart and Bryan Cranston dramedy The Upside which brought in $15.6 million to bring its two week total to nearly $44 million.

The biggest surprise this week was the performance of Dragon Ball Super: Brody which debuted in the third spot with a $10.5 million take. An impressive total considering that the 2018 Japanese anime fantasy martial arts film opened in just 467 theaters compared to Aquaman's 3,400 which brought in just over $10 million to put the film in the fourth slot over the weekend. {googleads}

Rounding out the top five was Marvel's animated adventure Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse which topped $7.3 million.

Dropping to sixth was the family adventure tale A Dog's Way Home which finished in sixth with just over $7 million to bring its two week total to $21 million.

The little horror/thriller Escape Room finished this week in seventh place, dropping two slots with a $5.2 million total which was enough to beat out Disney's box office stalwart Mary Poppins Returns which added another $5 million to its impressive $159 million total after spending five weeks on the charts.

Rounding out the top top ten were the Transformers installment Bumblebee which finished ninth with $4.6 million, while the Ruth Bader Ginsburg biopic On the Basis of Sex finished tenth by adding another $3.9 million to its four week total.
