Triple Threat (2019) - Movie Review

Make no bones about it, Triple Threat is named after the unforgettable TITANIC team-up of martial arts maestros Iko Uwais (The Raid movies), Tiger Chen (Man of Tai Chi) and Tony Jaa (the Ong Bak trilogy) as they join forces, after kicking each other’s ass, in one movie.

But Triple Threat is not done there.  These three then take on the hulking masterwork of muscle that is Scott Adkins, Michael Bisping, and Michael Jai White and their team of aggressive mercenaries.  All in all, Triple Threat proves to be a violent masterpiece of body blows and kung-fu kicks that the cinema has been desperately short of here lately.

"Triple Threat is your 1980s lift back to grittier days of bone, muscle, and lots of blood."

Even if its main story of an heiress who wants to bring down the Chinese syndicate seems a little light and feathery, it is the non-stop action and brutal beat downs that makes this one worthy of your money.  Co-starring Celina Jade and Jeeja Yanin, Triple Threat shares the martial arts glory equally among the sexes.

Triple Threat opens with a jungle-set rescue mission as a Jai leads a group of well-armed and well-paid warmongers into the very heart of darkness to rescue one of their brothers in arms.  They then blow up the rest of the camp, killing everyone in the blast’s wake.  Or so they think.  This scene lays out the non-stop action vibe of hard hits and brutal kills as, one by one, soldiers are shredded by bullets that rip though limbs and chests.

But there are survivors to their fire and fury.  The first one is Uwais.  We know him as a martial artist action choreographer, a stuntman, and an actor, famous for his work in The Raid movies.  Here, he plays Jaka and Jaka after watching his wife die in the Thai camp as a spray of bullets rips through her, sets out on a mission of revenge.  He is our instigator in this team-up of martial arts choreographers.

His journey leads him to an underground Muay Thai tournament where he, after witnessing a bloody takedown by Chen and Jaa, jumps in the ring and gets his ass handed to him.  Fast friends are formed, though, and after double-crossing them with an unexpected arrest, winds up joining their side when the mercenaries come crawling back from the sewers to take down a woman who wants to put an end to the Chinese syndicate.Triple Threat (2019) - Movie Review

Bone-crushing, beautiful and all sorts of violent, Triple Threat definitely delivers the gory goods. Each punch echoes in your core and each bullet that explodes from the machine guns absolutely splatters the screen when it finds its target.  This is brutal, fist-flying stuff and, for those longing for the days of martial arts actioneers, Triple Threat is a promise fulfilled.

If you need an action flick with violence so aggressive and with so much blood squirting all over the place with each and every bullet, then Triple Threat is your 1980s lift back to grittier days of bone, muscle, and lots of blood.

The film will be in theaters for one day only, Tuesday, March 19, 2019, but will quickly be available on VOD on March 22, 2019.

Oh, yes, there will be blood.
