Geostorm - Movie Trailer

Warner Bros. just released the first trailer for Geostorm, a natural disaster flick set sometime in the future when a weather satellite goes rogue and wreaks havoc on our planet.

Geostorm stars Gerard Butler as Jake, a scientist who, along with his brother, Max, played by Jim Sturgess, is tasked with solving the satellite program’s malfunction. Abbie Cornish stars as Secret Service agent Sarah Wilson; Alexandra Maria Lara as Ute Fassbinder, the ISS astronaut who runs the space station; Daniel Wu as Cheng, the Hong Kong-based supervisor for the Dutch Boy Program; with Garcia as U.S. President Andrew Palma; and Harris as Secretary of State Leonard Dekkom. The film also stars Adepero Oduye (12 Years a Slave), Amr Waked (Syriana), Robert Sheehan (Season of the Witch) and Eugenio Derbez (Instructions Not Included).

It is worth pointing out that Geostorm features the directorial debut of Dean Devlin who wrote Independence Day. The writer-turned-director will undoubtedly have his hands full with a film like this that features loads of action, many moving parts, and CGI shots in nearly every scene. Not sure this is the right project for a first time director to cut his teeth on, but only time will tell if he’s able to pull it off.  He also co-writes the script with TV writer Paul Guyot.

The trailer is actually handled quite well with an effectiely spooky apocalyptic feel to it as dozens of tornadoes slash down from the clouds and an ethereal remake of Louis Armstrong's What a Wonderful World plays over the action. It has the look and feel of something like Twister or The Day After Tomorrow and even features a familiar scene with towering ocean waves that crash into a very large city.

Geostorm is not yet rated by the MPAA, but these films typically go for the box office money of the PG-13 crowd.

Geostorm is slated to hit theaters later this fall on October 20, 2017.
