She Mob/The Girl from Pussycat (1968)

Give me some blood!  Whip him!

She Mob begins with an absolute BANG. Forget what you’ve heard about this film being utterly unwatchable.  It isn’t true.  Sure, sure, the “adult” material goes on for far too long, but all of that simply adds to the weirdness of this low budget affair, which admittedly is way OUT there . . . especially when the steel-tipped cone bras come out on full display and the characters, none of them reserved, absolutely lose it to the on-screen sex and violence.

"Demented and fun-filled, She Mob is a riot and a half as all the players learn if snakes truly do come out at night or not."

That jazzy score and crisp black-and-white cinematography all leads to a cast list with awesome names - like Big Shim, Twig, Baby, Sweetie East - and a naked woman in a big tub screaming repeatedly for “Tony, Tony, TONY” to come join her in the bath and wash her back.  It’s a simple request and it leads to plenty of “ohhhhh, Tony” moments as the two splish and splash around in the bath.

While the moment goes on for far too long, especially in an 80-minute movie, it shows that businesswoman Brenda McClain (Marni Castle, who also plays Big Shim) really digs her gigolo Tony (Adam Clyde) and she spoils him so with money and fast cars . . . which is going to become important as Tony is going to find himself in a tricky situation involving four half-crazy lesbians. She Mob/The Girl from Pussycat (1968)

But She Mob, produced and directed by NBC News veteran Maurice Levy from a screenplay by Diana Paschal (Nymphos Anonymous), has bigger things than BIG breast implants on its mind as this grindhouse caper switches things up and has a man as the damsel in distress while four lesbian inmate escapees hold him for ransom.  They want what he has access to: lots and lots of money.

And Big Shim, in her cone bra no less, will not be denied. Nor will her girls, who rather enjoy their time with Tony as they “rape” him over and over again.  Tony isn’t too bothered by their exploits, though.  Twice is nice!

Brenda is no pushover.  She wants her candy returned to her, so when Tony’s kidnapping leads to her hiring Sweetie East, a female tiger-stroking private detective, who wears a rather interesting form-fitting ensemble, all hell breaks loose as the two plot a memorable drop and exchange.  That’s if Tony doesn’t escape first.

Demented and fun-filled, She Mob is a riot and a half as all the players learn if snakes truly do come out at night or not.  It’s time to GO-GO wild over AGFA and Something Weird’s release of She Mob on blu-ray, with a new 2K restoration.  The release also includes The Girl from Pussycat as a bonus, but with dialogue as rich as what is contained in She Mob, nothing truly compares.

I'll show you my tits are as hard as my heart!  Complete with a gangland-styled shootout at its climax, She Mob is not to be missed.

AGFA and Something Weird team-up for a two-fer of Grindhouse capers.  In She Mob, fans get a wild ride through the sweaty backroads of Dallas and Waco.  She Mob is an underground miracle that feels like an alt-Earth FASTER PUSSYCAT! KILL! KILL! as realized by a young John Waters. Big Shim is the cone-bra-wearing butch leader of a wild girl gang that's running from the law. After kidnapping a gigolo named Tony, Shim and the girls demand a ransom from Tony's wealthy lady keeper... OR ELSE!! Produced and directed by NBC News veteran Maurice Levy, written by Diana Paschal, and featuring actresses culled from Jack Ruby's infamous Dallas nightclub, this film is an essential jewel in the other-dimensional vortex known as Texploitation.

In The Girl from Pussycat, fans get a film from New York with the crude experimentation of an early Andy Warhol film, The Girl from Pussycat is a fascinating outlier in the world of underground exploitation. The movie follows a girl gang of social and sexual anarchists as they have orgies, get stoned, rob banks, and torture men by jamming their fingers in toasters. Absurd and surreal, this feels like the dreamy collaboration between Jean-Luc Godard and Doris Wishman that never happened.

Video:

This region free Blu-ray presents She Mob and The Girl from Pussycat in 1080p with average results due to the low budget limitations of the original shoot.  Don’t go in expecting gold and silver.  The 2K transfer has been minted from the only 35mm theatrical print in existence and preserves the 1.85:1 experience of the cinema.  Details in the costumes are noticeable from time to time, but - as this is a low budget affair - nothing is consistent.  The truth of the matter is that AGFA’s release is probably the best the film is capable of looking.

Bang! Bang! Bang! A Dolby Digital Mono English soundtrack accompanies the film.
