Scoob! (2020)

Scoob! is a fun and witty family film.  Get that through your thick head first and foremost.  Sure, we might start out with the gang as youngsters, but fast forward a few years and the gang is ready for their first ride in the Mystery Machine! And what a trip it is as the gang rockets off to an adventure with the BLUE FALCON!!!!

"this script is zippy, bright, and full of fun references as current pop-culture moments are meshed alongside some unforgettable characters"

And that’s where the bulk of Scoob! scores major points from.  The film might even be better suited for longtime fans of Hanna-Barbera cartoons as there are plenty of surprises in this wacky feature.  I know that, as a longtime fan, I am happy with my blind purchase of the movie through Amazon Prime.  If you will remember, Scoob! was set to open in theaters on May 15th, but, with the concerns of Covid-19, Warner Bros made the wise decision to offer it through streaming platforms everywhere.

While crowded with what we want from an actual episode of the show AND a bunch of new characters, most of these additions work as Scooby (once again voiced by Frank Welker) and his pals are thrust into the modern era in an effort to stop, wait for it, the evil mustachioed Dick Dastardly (Jason Isaacs) from opening a particular set of gates that should never be opened.

Already you can see that the gloves are off as director Tony Cervone’s movie starts combining Wacky Races with Scooby-Doo, Where Are You? and, trust me, he and screenwriters Adam Sztykiel, Jack Donaldson, Derek Elliott, and Matt Lieberman aren’t done playing with the Hanna-Barbera Productions sandbox.  {googleads}

Scoob! opens on a pre-Covid 19 Venice Beach.  The scene is almost surreal.  People are everywhere, but our focus on this bright day is on two people.  A very familiar-looking puppy (trying to steal some food) and a very young Shaggy (voiced by Will Forte).  Shaggy is alone.  He’s listening to a podcast on how to make friends and so, ironically enough, he “makes” friends out of the sand and prepares to have a picnic . . . and that’s when that hungry dog stealing food comes along . . . with the beach police in tow.

In a pinch, Shaggy names the dog, claims it is his, and thus, Scooby-Doo is born.

The two are fast friends and, in the pre-credits scene, we get to see them prepare for Halloween night, dressed as their favorite superheroes: Blue Falcon and Dynomutt, Dog Wonder and, yes, enter the haunted house that belongs in the famous cartoon’s opening moments as they enter it alongside new friends Daphne (voiced by Amanda Seyfried), Fred (Zac Efron), and Velma (Gina Rodriguez).

Just know that this script is zippy, bright, and full of fun references as current pop-culture moments are meshed alongside some unforgettable characters in an attempt to stop the unleashing of the Great Cerberus.Scoob! (2020)

The surprises are pretty rich, too, as Scooby and Shaggy - soon ousted from the group by Simon Cowell (yes, THAT Simon) - get attacked by robots in a bowling alley and are whisked away (along with the rest of the Mystery Incorporated gang) on an adventure like few others thanks to the Blur Falcon (Mark Wahlberg) and Dynomutt (Ken Jeong).

With tongue planted firmly in cheek, Scoob! is bursting with energy and fun as the gang of do-gooders go after the worst criminals known to the animated fandom in this rollicking film from Warner Bros.  The script stays true to the characters and gives fans, young and old, exactly what we want because the entire movie maintains a solid balance between crazy and respect as villains are eventually exposed, surprise abound, and meddling kids save the day.

Get the Scooby Snacks ready!   Thanks to Scoob!, the members of Mystery, Incorporated ride again!
