Moon of the Blood Beast

The BEAST is back!  If your lust for Z-grade schlocky entertainment proves insatiable after watching Moon of the Blood Beast, then I don't know what to tell you.  This flick gets a dirty job done.

This Troma Entertainment release marks Writer/Director Dustin Ferguson’s 72nd movie and it begins with a plea to Satan to open the gates of Hell and release the Blood Beast.  Low in budget but high in entertainment value, Moon of the Blood Beast might not be everyone’s cuppa tea, but it definitely scores high points with this schlockmeister.

"The BEAST is back!  If your lust for Z-grade schlocky entertainment proves insatiable after watching Moon of the Blood Beast, then I don't know what to tell you.  This flick gets a dirty job done."

Featuring performances from Dawna Lee Heising, Raymond Williams, D.T. Carney, and Alana Evans, Moon of the Blood Beast concerns itself with a haunting tale about a terrifying curse which plagues a southern California coastal town every 10 years.  It’s the Blood Beast cycle and, as evidenced by some trick cinematography (showing a POV of everything soaked in red) this creature is ready to resume the hunt for flesh.

Ferguson, who previously brought us Terror at Black Tree Forest, The Legacy of Boggy Creek, Escape to Black Tree Forest, Black Tree Forest III, Doll Killer, Die Sister, Die, Occult Holocaust, Gloved Murderess, Cheerleader Camp: To the Death, Shockumentary, Nemesis 5: The New Model, and Robowoman, might wear his D-grade influences on his sleeve as this film, holding hands with almost every monster movie from the 1970s, tips more than its hat to Track of the Moon Beast from 1976 (which is referenced here in this movie), but this gore-thrashed shocker is solid in its execution as a throwback film to an era of horror that definitely knew how to carve out some exploitation classics. Moon of the Blood Beast

Some people think the Blood Beast protects the town.  Some people think it haunts the seaside location.  The one thing they can agree on is that this monster IS real.  And Sheriff Frank (Carney), acting almost completely on his own, tries to turn the tide in a community convinced that there is a satanic animal on the prowl claiming sacrifices of its own choosing for The Horned and Hoofed One.  He’s got a lot of work to do as Ferguson keeps the random kills happening, with groovy schlocky effects, and offers little clues along the way to help out the poor office of the law.

And then there is Gabe Smith (Mike Ferguson) and his Smith & Wesson .45 who joins in on the hunt for this demon.  Things are spiraling out of control for this community and Frank needs as much help as he can get as bodies are discovered - three more overnight!!!  Try as he might to keep things contained, the exploits in Moon of the Blood Beast will not pass peacefully into paperwork to be filed away.

With a fun monster design and special effects from artist Alexys Paonessa (Electric Dreams, Black Lightning, Lucifer, Meathook Massacre: The Final Chapter), this low budget film makes for pure, popcorn escapism. Stick your hand in this gooey bucket and munch mindlessly away as the Moon of the Blood Beast rises over you!

The film is releasing on various formats, including a limited-edition VHS edition from Nemesis Video, and a streaming release through Troma Now.
