Lifechanger - Movie Review

Written, produced and directed by Justin McConnell (Galaxy of Horrors, Minutes Past Midnight), Lifechanger is one of the best horror hybrids to ever crawl its way out of Canada.  This film feels like an EVENT; like we are watching one of the great love cinematic affairs roll out on the screen as McConnell’s film builds itself around, of all things, one simple “What if?” idea of supernatural immortality.

"is less concerned with scaring the pants off you than it is with drawing you in to its spellbinding story."

And both the question asked AND answered will disturb you to NO end. If you want something challenging; something different; and something memorable this New Year, then Lifechanger is the film for you.

Lifechanger, starring Lora Burke, Jack Foley and Elitsa Bako, is an amazingly realized journey through fear, love, and all the bloody mess of connected sinew that unites those emotions.  This is a story that is less concerned with scaring the pants off you than it is with drawing you in to its spellbinding story of a love that truly does not die; it only morphs into a new host.

It is the story of a skinwalker who dares to love deeply.  Throughout his many forms and faces, Andrew has carried an endlessly burning torch for Julia.  While it is true that he “absorbs” humans and must feed from their blood in order to remain among the living, his love for her – no matter what human he becomes – does not wither.  You can probably imagine all the complications that this required changing of faces and forms could cause a person.  Hell, Andrew has to KILL in order to remain among her.

And she doesn’t know.  That’s right, Julia has no idea that the man she used to love is STILL alive and, as he takes different forms and sexes, must watch her at a distance, trying any which way possible to get close to her again.

I love the pacing of this movie and the fact that it comes across as an ensemble piece, thanks to the BIG IDEA at the center of the film.  No performance is weak; all of them build upon the other and work to create this creative piece of horror that is neither cheap or gimmicky.  Everyone is at their level best as each new actor presented in Andrew’s story carries that same emotional charge to help us understand the path – regardless of how bloody it is – toward Julia’s side.

Lifechanger - Movie Review

Lifechanger is a movie that keeps its themes and its characters fully realized.  It is quite thorough in its examination on the brutal effects of this violent sort of immortality.   Thanks to bold casting, the film is great shock to the system of usual horror clichés.  The cinematography from Sasha Moric is incredibly complex; we get awesome, mood-striking locations and, thanks to a strong use of mirrors and profiles, the whole thing becomes symbolic and profound.

Lifechanger will be released on VOD on January 1, 2019, by Uncork’d Entertainment.
