Jeepers Creepers 3 - Blu-ray Review

3 beersSeptember 26.  To my knowledge that’s the only day Jeepers Creepers 3 was granted access to theaters.  You know why and I’m not about to go into all the details surrounding writer/director Victor Salva (Powder, Jeepers Creepers) past here.  The point is that fans got what they wanted after waiting 14 years with the arrival of this movie.  It might have had its fair share of production problems – having to move its shoot from Canada to Louisiana – and so on but the end result is a solid, if slightly inferior, continuation of Salva’s story.

Long gestating and several working titles later, Jeepers Creepers 3 arrives on 1080p for the masses to enjoy and, yeah, even fortified chainguns can’t stop the Creeper (once again portrayed by Johnathan Breck) from a-creep, creep, creepin’ around the Florida countryside.  The film fits nicely alongside the other titles, continuing to be both gruesome and dark - even if it is largely filler.  It doesn’t dip in its effects either; however, the film – being a bit of a drop in characterization (as if the busload of teenagers from the second film couldn’t get any worse) – has its issues.

Mainly, no matter what happens throughout the course of the movie, we only have the Creeper to cheer on. Everyone else – and this unfortunately includes Stan Shaw as Sheriff Dan – is just there to shrug along toward the eventual meat grinder.  And that’s a big bummer.  We get the violence and the gore.  Great.  We just miss out on some solid characterization and, when you consider that this title has a longer running time than most 90-minute horror titles, is a bit of a head scratcher.

Featuring performances from Meg Foster as Gaylen Brandon, Gabrielle Haugh as Addison Brandon, and featuring a cameo from Gina Philips as Trish Jenner, Jeepers Creepers 3 concerns itself with the continued bloodletting shortly after the police discover the Creeper’s truck stuffed with bodies.  This is, of course, moments after the second film in the series.  What follows is a chase sequence in which the Creeper manages to get his truck back without having to actually drive it.  Interesting.

The police form a posse and a group of teenagers join in on the hunt as the Creeper, fulfilling a prophecy from 23 years ago, goes on another rampage with spears, small explosives, and severed hands.  There’s a healthy amount of gore as stupid kids continue to do stupid things but – because Salva keeps thing even – even the adults will leave you groaning.  The ineptitude when faced with such a hideous being is apparently all-consuming.

What we do get in this filler feature are white-eyed trances brought about by touching things buried and belonging to the Creeper.  We just don’t get much of an explanation for it.  In this way, the film leaves fans hanging on from something a bit meatier the next time…if there is a next time.  Supposedly, Jeepers Creepers 4 has been plotted out…

Do not pee on the Creeper’s truck.  No matter how badly you have to piss, just keep walking.  With the release of Jeepers Creepers 3, know that you’ve been warned.

Screen Media Films presents Jeepers Creepers 3 on blu-ray with solid results.  The aspect ratio is 2.35:1 and the sound – here in DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 – are both dynamically layered.  Black levels – as there are a lot – are dynamic and feature strong definitions throughout.  Nicely saturated, there are no dents in its shiny armor.  Colors are strong, particularly the opening moments.  Black levels are clearly defined, too.  Important considering the film takes place during the evening hours.  Shadows are detailed
