Inseminoid

What happens when like-minded British and Hong Kong film producers get together to make a cheapo-depot sex film?  They ride the success of Alien, amp up the sex, and make one of the strangest exploitation films of the early 1980s.  Inseminoid is a horror film like few others. Thanks to an ultra-cheap production and a lot of supple female flesh, this alien encounter keeps its phasers on stun as really bad acting leads us to bizarro sex with a bug-like alien and beyond.

"not so much a suspenseful film as it is a rather shocking string of horror scenes"

And you thought that creatures popping out of your chest was bad?  Inseminoid takes it to another level rather quickly with disturbing images and a killer monster hiding inside a now two-month pregnant woman.

Directed by Norman Warren (The Prey, Satan’s Slave), Inseminoid is smartly-paced and throws us straight into the action as an interstellar archeologist team - Judy Geeson (as Sandy), Robin Clarke (as Mark), Stephanie Beacham (as Dr. Kate Carson), Jennifer Ashley (as Commander Holly La Kay), Stephen Grives ( as Gary), Barry Houghton (as Karl), Heather Wright (as Sharon), Rosalind Lloyd (as Gail), Trevor Thomas (as Mitch), Victoria Tennant (as Barbra), David Baxt (as Ricky Williams) - lands on a planet named Cephus and discovers a whole series of tombs that are bizarrely fascinating.

Unfortunately, there is danger lurking about on the surface because, already, the team is getting picked off.  When all accesses to the interiors of the ship are blocked, the alien being finds another way in: impregnating Sandy.  The scene of alien insemination is rather disturbing as Sandy is stripped nude and the alien inserts what looks like a clear tube right into her vajayjay.  And, yes, you can see something travelling through the tube. If that doesn’t chill you to the bone, you might not have a soul.Inseminoid

What follows is not so much a suspenseful film as it is a rather shocking string of horror scenes.  From drinking blood to chainsaw murders and beyond, Warren tackles the aspect of gore with a lot of glee.  I kind of wish he had cared more about some of the acting because these British blowhards can’t quite connect with the outer space shenanigans.  This makes for a bit of a disconnect between the action and the emotion.

It might be crude, but Inseminoid certainly isn’t forgettable and, in the years since its original release, the film - as evident by Scream Factory’s skilled handling of the blu-ray release - is now considered a minor cult flick.

Somewhere in the depths of one woman’s tight jeans, there is Inseminoid.

An alien creature has been waiting millions of years for a chance to breed, and its time has finally come when a group of space explorers unwittingly lands on its home planet. The 12-member crew is investigating for possible origins for the planet's vanished civilization. Instead, they awaken the planet's creature and discover that the horror to come is more terrifying than any nightmare that they could ever imagine!  Scream Factory tackles Inseminoid and the results are startling bright and clear.

Video:

The 2.35:1 aspect ratio brings new life to this release with sharp edges and a vibrancy that is pretty strong concerning its age.  The film is dominated with reds and greens that sparks with strong colors. It’s a cheap film, for sure, but the simple backgrounds burst with new details and a nice level of clarity. Black levels are solid and skin tones are natural.  This is, after all, a dark film. There are lots of night scenes; thankfully, the lines hold their edges. Shadows are defined and the film has a new depth previously unseen. The creature effects are well-defined and punctuated with new details that reveal the cheapness of the shoot.

Audio:

The sound is provided in a strong DTS-Master Audio Mono track.  While not immersive, the dialogue is clear and so, too, are the sound effects of the creature slithering around in the background.

Honestly, the supplemental material is probably why you will want to pick this release up.  Fans get a 90-minute NEW film covering the many strange and wonderfully weird films of Norman Warren.  There is also a separate interview with Warren, an interview with actor Trevor Thomas, a Q & A series of recordings, theatrical trailers, TV Spots, and a still gallery.
