Color out of Space - blu-ray

Ladies and Gentlemen, Richard Stanley is back!  I have just been introduced to my new go-to movie.  Color Out of Space is right up there with Mandy when it comes to imaginative tales of terror.  The mixture of CGI and practical effects in this science fiction horror narrative is downright disturbing.

"Directed and adapted by Richard Stanley , Color Out of Space earns major points thanks to Stanley’s willingness to GO THERE"

The heartache that one family experiences as an alien presence contaminates their drinking water and pits them against one another - including their alpacas - is both unexpected and constantly charged with trauma.  The end result is an intelligently-made, well-acted film that doesn’t cut corners when it comes to nightmarish interpretations of Lovecraftian horror.

Firing my imagination and delighting all my neurons is Nicolas Cage in director Richard Stanley’s absolutely riveting Color Out of Space.  This H.P. Lovecraft adaptation is deliriously entertaining and full of some mesmerizing body-horror as one visiting Hydrologist Ward Phillips (Elliot Knight) arrives in the sticks and witnesses the aftermath of a meteorite that has crashed on one family’s Alpaca ranch.  Things aren’t ever going to be the same again.

In this trippy flick, Nathan Gardner (Cage) and his wife Theresa (Joely Richardson), his daughter Lavinia (Madeleine Arthur), his elder son Benny (Brendan Meyer), and his youngest son Jack (Julian Hilliard) have turned their back on life in the city.  This is all in response to Theresa’s mastectomy. But the solace of the woods and the milk from the alpacas is short lived.

What follows in their acceptance of the hills and the woods (and their daughter’s sudden interest in Wiccan practices) is a purple-glowing meteorite crashing onto their property and, rather slowly, their personalities changing.  Something is affecting them and their neighbor, Ezra (Tommy Chong), but the mystery of what it is and what it does is not so easily solved. The truth is that, in this film, no one is spared. No one.

With animals mutating, large fruit being grown (and suddenly spoiled), and massive changes in personalities, Color Out of Space spares no one from the shock and from the suffering. If your interest runs parallel to mine, you will definitely be sucked into this crazy science fiction movie that mixes B-movie tropes with intelligence and grace.  Color out of Space - blu-ray

Directed and adapted by Richard Stanley (from The Island of Dr. Moreau fame), Color Out of Space earns major points thanks to Stanley’s willingness to GO THERE and, as he got canned from his previous directing post years and years ago, this film and its interpretation of Lovecraft’s short story comes across as very, very brave.

It’s as if the stars aligned in his favor and the world caught up with his vision . . . which is good, considering that he is aiming to make THREE Lovecraft adaptations in the next few years.  Hopefully, they all star Cage, who - yes - goes full-on GONZO in some key moments here.

Released by RLJE Films, the unforgettable journey that is Color Out of Space is waiting to be discovered by you and your friends on blu-ray.  Time to get weird.
