Winterskin (2019)

If the retro logo from Dark Temple Motion Pictures doesn’t get your mojo going, then you might just be without a pulse.  Winterskin is destined to earn a cult following.  That's how sickly twisted and cool this horror flick is.

"Winterskin is all sorts of throwback gristle and grit fun"

The dark and chilly atmosphere of this horror film is sewn into our skin rather quickly with a moon-filled opening.  Through the bare woods we move slowly with our eyes tacked on to a lone cabin.  The snow is deep here and, as one family is gunned down by an unseen threat, so, too, is the blood.  We are talking buckets of blood. It is, after all, a massacre that we will soon witness and, with its conclusion, the tone of this horror film is established.

And you won’t soon forget this tale of madness.

Winterskin is all sorts of throwback gristle and grit fun.  The film is wild and bloody and, rather surprisingly, dependent upon two very strong performances from David Lenik (Escape From Cannibal Farm) and Rowena Bentley (The House Of Violent Desire) as they carry the film while their characters, Billy Cavanagh on a rescue mission and the out of hand antics of Agnes, are at odds with each other and the supernatural elements banging just outside a lone cabin in a desolate wilderness.

Written and directed by acclaimed filmmaker Charlie Steeds, Winterskin tells the unforgettable frostbitten story of survival against a sort of deranged madness that only the harshest of winter seasons can provide.  Billy, having been shot in the crisp white snowy wilderness, awakens to discover that he is being nursed back to health and cared for by Agnes.

Hours have passed since his injury and she is all that stands between him and the door.  Except that she seems nice enough and, with a great performance from Bentley, manages to bustle us all into a relaxed state with her stories and, hell, she even has a wooly dog to keep her company.  But her compassion soon changes into paranoia as she reveals that there is something lurking about in the wilderness.  It is vile and bloody and it wants in to feel the warmth of their fire. Winterskin (2019)

Soon enough, we are all on edge.  For Billy, it seems his rescue mission has flip-flopped into a mission of survival.  But whom should he fear?  There are skinless creatures just outside the door.  And, true to Agnes’ word, they desperately do want inside the cabin.  But, as he hears more and more from Agnes, it seems that maybe she is also not to be trusted.  His dreams tell him to be on edge.

Co-starring Barrington De La Roche, Peter Cosgrove, Kate Davies-Speak, John Lomas, Harrison Nash and Dylan Curtis, Winterskin has all sorts of surprises in store for its audience.  It will steal your own breath, too, as its practical effects creep and crawl your way, begging for a piece of your skin to keep warm.
