Between Worlds (2018) - Blu-ray Review

He's the leader of the pack!

Stop me if you have heard this one before: the critical reaction to the latest Nicolas Cage movie just leveled Hiroshima.  Yup.  Yup. Yup.  All true, mofos.  Well, here’s another one that fits that description . . . except that, once again, the critics are wrong.  Maybe not for everyone, yes, but Between Worlds is so righteously confident in its weird and wacky ways that, damn, you just can’t dismiss it, nor the thought, once again, of Cage in a pair of Y-front animal print tighty whities.

"a strange tale of the supernatural.  It is disturbed and saucy as hell"

Between Worlds’ raunchy tale of sex and the supernatural among truck drivers certainly isn’t for everyone out there, but it is exactly the right weirdness who have certainly embraced Cage’s latter-day resurrection as a cult film hero.  Personally, I will fight ANYONE who suggests that Cage doesn’t have a use in cinema.  He’s one of our best and brightest character actors there and is always willing to GO THERE with his performances.

What happens in Between Worlds as he plays an out-of-shape and down-on-his-luck truck driver named Joe just might blow your mind.  His journey into the other side begins with in a truck stop bathroom.  Being the nice guy that he is, Joe hears the sounds of a woman being choked in a stall by a big and burley man and so he puts an end to it; saving her life.  Or so he thinks.

Thing is, Julie (Franka Potente), the woman he saved, is not at all thankful.  He nearly blew her chances of crossing over and guiding her daughter, Billie (Penelope Mitchell), back into her body.  You see, Julie has a gift and the closer to death she is, the stronger her ability to interact with the recently deceased is and, with her daughter in a coma and on life support thanks to a reckless motorcycle crash, it was imperative that she get the job done of guiding her back to her body.

Joe is told of her abilities on the truck ride over to the hospital.  He mentions the loss of his wife and his daughter to her and the two share their worries and their concerns and then, once in the hospital, they find themselves in a very interesting situation.  Suddenly, he is the one choking her out so that she can, once again, guide her daughter back to her body.

But, now that Joe and Julie have met, is the person inhabiting Billie’s body really her daughter? Between Worlds (2018) - Blu-ray Review

Written and directed by Maria Pulera (Falsely Accused), Between Worlds is a strange tale of the supernatural.  It is disturbed and saucy as hell, eventually having Cage in bed with two different women while a scene from a book called Memories is being read to him to help him get off.  Twisted and weirdly shot, the movie is a disturbing romp through Mobile, Alabama.

Hell, this shit worked in Mandy and, while not nearly as otherworldly here in this movie, the bizarreness off this world of rough sex and violent supernatural  – with Cage getting hosed down by Mitchell as he works on a motorcycle – is solidified thanks to a haunting theme by Angelo Badalamenti and cinematography from Thomas Hencz.

Break on through and let Cage be your guide to the other side!  Between Worlds is now available on blu-ray thanks to Lionsgate and Saban Films.
