Sleint Night, Deadly Night Part Two: Collector's Edition blu-ray

Because Santa Claus only comes once a year, why not go back to the well?  Silent Night, Deadly Night Part Two has to be one of the most fantastically awful sequels out there.  Sure, sure, sure, it’s a pile of shit, recapping the original movie for half of the film before spiraling out of control as Eric Freeman, playing the brother of the original killer, flips his lid and finds himself finishing what his brother left undone in a performance that amounts to a herculean effort of expressive nostril flaring and eyebrow arching.

"reveals itself to be a more of a black comedy than the original and, yes, that has to do with the portrayal of Ricky at the hands of Freeman"

Ho! Ho! Ho! Let the axe swing and the blood will flow.  NAUGHTY!  Ricky Caldwell has had enough of psychiatrists coming around the mental hospital to interview him.  Yeah, he dressed as Santa just as his brother did and, yeah, he killed some people, just like his brother, too.  But why?  That seems to be the big question.  And so, for the first part of the movie, we try to understand why Billy killed.  Could it be the abuse from Mother Superior at the orphanage?  Could it be what both brothers witnessed so long ago: the raping of their mother by a psycho dressed as Santa?

Whatever the reason, tis the season!  And, yes, Ricky is just as crazy as his brother and, when pushed just a bit too far by all the questioning, Ricky proves that he is just as dangerous in a red suit as his brother.

Padded with re-filmed scenes from the original and lots of archival footage, Silent Night, Deadly Night just could not have cost all that much to make.  There is indeed a drop in the overall quality of the film and, as it is edited, written, and directed by Lee Harry, the film attempts to add significance to a character that was barely in the original film: Ricky.  But, thanks to the reshoots, we see him a prominent figure in all the madness.

It only makes sense then that Ricky would follow in his demented brother’s footsteps.  From the abuse to all the sex that other people are having, Ricky takes out his pent up frustrations by grabbing the blade that was left at his feet in the orphanage (new scene) and continuing with the NEW family tradition of killing all the NAUGHTY people on Santa’s list.

With an extra amount of attention brought to Ricky’s childhood both in and out of the orphanage (after he is adopted), Silent Night, Deadly Night Part 2 reveals itself to be a more of a black comedy than the original and, yes, that has to do with the portrayal of Ricky at the hands of Freeman, who succeeds in solidifying this B-grade picture as a horror/comedy, especially when the movie dares to dip its toes in the effects of tragedy.  Hilarious.

Freeman goes over the top all too soon and, honestly, that’s when the gloves come off of this insane slasher.  His performance – along with some of the other inane dialogue – proves to be too much and Freeman squeezes his face together and starts screaming, “NAUGHTY!” at anyone and everything that moves.  The results are pretty damn unforgettable as Silent Night, Deadly Night Part 2 proves itself to be an unforgettably so bad it’s kinda GREAT trashterpiece of yuletide . . . meatings.

Silent Night, Deadly Night Part 2 is now available on blu-ray thanks to Scream Factory.

Scream Factory’s new 4K scan of Silent Night, Deadly Night Part 2’s original 35mm negative is damn impressive.  Colors are pumped up.  Shadows are more defined than ever.  Interior scenes have depth and warmth and the exterior shots feel alive and vibrant.  There are textures in the clothes of the cast and, overall, a bit more vibrancy to what has previously been issued on 1080p.  The sound is presented in a thunderous DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 that adds a bit more thump to some of the action scenes.  The aspect ratio of the release is 1.85:1.
