Those “of a certain age” may remember being read The Story of Ferdinand, the 1936 children’s book from author Munro Leaf and illustrator Robert Lawson about the bull named Ferdinand who would rather smell flowers than fight in bullfights.

In the classic story, Ferdinand was eventually selected as a fighting bull due to his immense adult size. But he wasn’t very good at fighting as he only wanted to lie down in the ring upon becoming enchanted by the flowers in the hats of the female audience members.

After watching the trailers, it appears the folks over at Blue Sky Studios have a done a fairly faithful job of bringing this heartwarming story to life in an animated comedy that features the voices of John Cena, Kate McKinnon, Gina Rodriguez, Anthony Anderson and others.

The moral of Munro’s story was to never judge others by their outward appearance, and Ferdinand the movie seems to take that message to heart with a story that emphasizes the virtues of strength, bravery  and being true to one’s self. Values that certainly have a place in today’s world.

Ferdinand has not yet been rated by the MPAA, but we expect a PG-13.

Ferdinand will china shop its way into theaters this holiday season on December 15, 2017.
