The Big Sick - New Trailer

Synopsis: Based on the real-life courtship between Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon, THE BIG SICK tells the story of Pakistan-born aspiring comedian Kumail (Nanjiani), who connects with grad student Emily (Kazan) after one of his standup sets. However, what they thought would be just a one-night stand blossoms into the real thing, which complicates the life that is expected of Kumail by his traditional Muslim parents. When Emily is beset with a mystery illness, it forces Kumail to navigate the medical crisis with her parents, Beth and Terry (Holly Hunter and Ray Romano) who he's never met, while dealing with the emotional tug-of-war between his family and his heart. THE BIG SICK is directed by Michael Showalter (Hello My Name Is Doris) and produced by Judd Apatow (Trainwreck, This Is 40) and Barry Mendel (Trainwreck, The Royal Tenenbaums).

Art imitates life in the new film from real-life couple Kumail Nanjiana and Zoe Kazan that debuted at Sundance earlier this year and will hit theaters this summer.

Nanjiana (Kumail) and Kazan (Emily) star as a multi-cultural couple who fall in love following a one night-stand. The hook comes from the fact that Emily’s family struggles to come to grips with the fact that Kumail hails from a muslim family. Naturally, most of the jokes emanate from the uncomfortable culture clashes that ensue once Emily is beset with a serious mystery illness. Judd Apatow produces while Michael Showalter directs from a script by Nanjiani himself.

The Big Sick also stars Ray Romano and Holly Hunter as Emily’s very white parents who must navigate the emotional tug-of-war between their daughter’s desires and their own conservative sensibilities.

The Big Sick is rated R for language including some sexual references.

The Big Sick will come to theaters later this summer on June 23, 2017.
