F. Scott Fitzgerald's bootleg-era novel, The Great Gatsby gets yet another big screen adaptation, this time from Aussie director Baz Luhrmann who seems right for the project since his penchant for bloated over-production (as evidenced in Australia) should play quite nicely into Fitzgerald's vision of greed, extravagance and unrestrained desire. You can watch the newly released trailer below and decide for yourself whether the art-deco stylings and over-the-top set pieces will set Luhrmann's rendition apart from the half-dozen or so adaptations that have defiled big screens throughout the years.

The film stars Tobey Maguire, Carey Mulligan, Isla Fisher, Joel Edgeton and Leonardo DiCaprio as the urbane, world-weary Jay Gatsby. Luhrmann filmed the movie in 3D causing one to wonder how an already busy New York of neon-lit skyscrapers and frame-to-frame extravagance might translate to a format that already feels busy at its core. Of course, it's all about story, and with Fitzgerald's work widely considered one of the greatest American novels of all time, a failure certainly can't be blamed on the source material. It's all up to you, Luhrmann.

Set in the roaring twenties, The Great Gatsby tells the story of midwesterner, Nick Carraway who becomes enchanted by the mysterious past and lavish lifestyle of his New York neighbor, Jay Gatsby. But once drawn into the Gatsby's world, Carraway discovers the secrets, lies, and troubles that have been Gatsby's stepping stones to success.
