Rock of Ages - Movie Trailer

The Hairspray-inspired, '80s-drenched anthem to the golden age of rock 'n roll has hit the web in the form of a new trailer for Adam Shankman's Rock of Ages.

Many will remember Shankman for his hugely popular Broadway musical adaptation Hairspray from a few years back. But this time he points the spoof machine to the hair-metal bands of the '80s and features some of the decade's best music sung by many of today's most popular artists. Though Rock of Ages is about as far away from Broadway as one can get (bother literally and figuratively), we trust Shankman with the product as the guy clearly knows how to stage a musical.

The story is based on the musical by Chris D'Arienzo and takes place in 1987 as Dennis Dupree (Alec Baldwin) is trying to save his Bourbon Ballroom on the Sunset Strip from the claws of a conservative crusader played by Catherine Zeta-Jones. Meanwhile there's a love-story thread involving two youngsters (Diego Boneta and Footloose's Julianne Hough) who travel to L.A. with hopes of realizing their musical dreams. But the star of the show looks to be Tom Cruise as legendary rocker Stacee Jaxx who is hired to save the Ballroom with one last performance.

Rock of Ages features an ensemble cast of Hollywood A-listers, B-listers, musicians, and up-and-comers in the form of Bryan Cranston, Paul Giamatti, Russel Brand, Will Forte, Mary J. Blige, Kevin Nash, and more.

Regardless of how you feel about musicals, this one looks to be a must-see if for no other reason than to see Cruise's leather-clad, Axl Rose-inspired stage gyrations. We can only hope its as memorable as his cameo in 2008's Tropic Thunder.
