Deals and Rumors Report: THE CROW Reboot; LAST EXORCISM Sequel; Zeta-Joins Joins Soderbergh

The Crow Reboot Gets a Director and Writer

The Crow Sequel NewsJust one short day after settling the lawsuit that had held up production of the much talked about remake of The Crow, Relativity Media have announced that F. Javier Gutierrez has been brought on board to direct the film. The project was originally rumored to be helmed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo with Bradley Cooper starring, but both were apparently scared off while Relativity and The Weinstein Company sorted out their differences.

The original film, that starred Brandon Lee, made slightly over $50 million at the domestic box office, but went on to become somewhat of a cult classic on home video partly fueled by the fact that Lee, the son of martial arts mega-star Bruce Lee, was accidentally shot and killed by a faulty prop gun while making the film.

Gutierrez, whose previous directorial credits include the Spanish-language crime drama Before the Fall as well as a few film shorts, will be working from a script by Jesse Wigutow who is also relatively untested but an up-and-comer in Hollywood circles.

Last Exorcism Sequel Gets Start Date and Director

The Last Exorcism sequelQuickly falling out of favor but sill gasping for a few last breaths, the "found footage faux documentary" phenomenon will get at least one more go around as the rumors that the sequel to 2010's successful The Last Exorcism have come true. Officially announced last year, the project is now set to kick off next month with filming taking place in New Orleans while a little-known filmmaker takes the helm. Ed Gass-Donnelley will direct the R-rated film with Ashley Bell reprising the role as the rubber-limbed teenager Nell, who displayed an extreme aversion to wearing the symbol of our Lord. The best bit of news to come out of this announcement however, is that the team has decided to ratchet up the thrills with an R rating to show the true horror of what the subject matter can offer.

Zeta-Jones Joins Soderbergh's Side Effects

Stephen Soderbergh - SIde EffectsCatherine Zeta-Jones will be reteaming with her Traffic filmmaker Steven Soderbergh for the director's next film, Side Effects which is reported to be a psychological, pharmaceutical thriller. The film has already begun compiling a star-studded cast with Blake Lively, Channing Tatum, and Jude Law having been brought on board. However, according to new reports coming from Variety, the film's financial backers are now threatening to pull out due to some sort of issue with Lively's casting in the film. It has not yet been made clear if they want Lively out, but regardless, the film is scheduled to lock down a deal before Sundance is over and to begin filming this April in New York City.
