We've been saying this for years now, but with this latest announcement it's safe to officially declare Hollywood bankrupt of new ideas. The cupboard is bare. Apparently Scott Glassgold and Raymond Brothers of IAM Entertainment have closed on a deal that will make a feature film out of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. We are now scraping the last little bit of creative goo from the bottom of the brilliant-minds barrel. Down there where thoughts of turning board games, theme parks, and chewing gum into movies coagulate into a steaming pile of poo.

Anyway, the aforementioned production team (behind Hurricane Season and forthcoming Technotise) have begun meeting with writers and dabbling in several concepts that might bring the holiday tradition to the big screen. "We're aiming to make a four-quadrant, family-friendly film somewhere in that Night At The Museum, Elf sweet spot," Glassgold says. “We are always searching for the next Miracle on 34th Street,” says Macy’s senior VP, Robin Hall.

It's that last statement that probably best sums up this whole brand-to-movie-adaptation craze that has the film industry stuck in a rut of mediocrity. They're always looking to "re-explore" the next "whatever," rather than spending resources looking to "create" the next "whatever." Chasing instead of thinking. Then again, they are a business looking to make a buck and minimize risk, and history shows that sequels and nostalgia sell tickets. So, we're all partly to blame.

Storyboard artist Joel Venti (previously storyboarded for Night at the Museum: Battle for the Smithsonian and Thor) created a few sketches of what the Macy's Day Parade could look like and presented them for consideration. There is currently no premise, no script, and no characters.

Turn it into a horror where giant helium-filled balloons maim and kill and we might be on board, but doubt Macy's would be too keen on the idea.
