Stallone won't direct Expendables 2Speculation about a sequel to last year's surprise hit actioner, The Expendables has been percolating ever since Stallone began tweeting about his idea for it last year - even before the original was released.

Who will be in it? Who will be the villain? Will Arnold Schwarzenegger consider this for his big screen comeback? Though we won't get these questions answered any time soon, we do know that Stallone likely won't be behind the camera this time around.

An unnamed source (always a bad source to count on) at L.A. Times' 24 Frames blog is reporting that Stallone, who both starred in, co-wrote, and directed number 1 which went on to become a surprise summer hit, is not planning on directing the film and is, in fact, meeting with potential candidates to helm the follow-up as we speak.

The Expendables was basically an independent film as it was largely funded and created outside the traditional Hollywood machine but went on to make around $275 million worldwide last year on a Lionsgate release. The film featured a dream list of of action superstars like Stallone, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Steve Austin, and Jason Statham. The film's plot centered on a team of mercenaries who headed to South America on a mission to overthrow a dictator. Oh, and they blew a bunch of stuff up.

We do know that the script for the Expendables 2 is in pretty good hands and has, in fact, already been written by David Agosto and Ken Kaufman, the latter of whom counts Space Cowboys and The Missing among his repertoire. So the hype machine and gossip mills should get up and running at full steam very soon.

Stay tuned!
