In a World - Movie Review

4 stars

Lake Bell, after surviving the supporting actress stranglehold for a number of years, breaks out on her own with In a World…, a movie she writes, directs, and stars in.  The movie subverts the romantic comedy genre by humorously tackling the male-dominated world of voiceovers.  Smart, relatable, and engaging to the last minute, In a World… is a refreshing rom-com that introduces a new voice with a great vision.

Bell is Carol Solomon, a drifting 31-year-old voice coach who finds herself battling with her famous father, Sam (Fred Melamed), whose voice has graced movie trailers for years.  He supports his daughter but doesn’t believe that women should invade his territory.  She tolerates this stance only because she doesn’t have to deal with it.

Carol is used to working with dialects and sort of falls into her father’s world on accident.  She records a temp trailer track and suddenly the producers take notice.  They want her voice to support The Amazon Games Quadrilogy and its female-led cast.  It’s a whole new world for everyone involved as Sam regretfully passes the torch to his daughter.

Co-starring Ken Marino as her father’s sleazy protégé and Demetri Martin as a shy sound engineer who can’t muster the strength to ask her out, In a World… never placates its audience with traditional romantic comedy moments.  Everything gets flipped on its head – including relationship ups and downs – due to its honesty and the rich world it depicts.

Hollywood gets egg on their face.  An outsider’s point of view is more mainstream than anything they care to offer.  And, as far as the Hollywood in-jokes go, this is refreshingly free of those.  It’s perfectly suited for any audience and – because it operates on breaking molds – should be required viewing for anyone in the movie-making business.

Bell treats each of her characters – even the ones we are conditioned by every rom-com made before it to hate – with a credibility that makes this film a revelation.  In fact, the film is so confident that I feel uncomfortable labeling it as a genre film.  It is so much more and should be defined only by the statement it makes regarding sexism in Hollywood.

In a World… is refreshingly delightful and smarter than it ever needs to be.  It’s an intelligent comedy for the masses that isn’t insulting to the couples out there looking for a fun date night.  Lake Bell is a new voice and deserves to be praised with this, her first film.
