Captain Underpants: The FIrst Movie - Blu-ray Review

4 beersNow, this is how you build a franchise...with sock puppets.

As much as I would like to praise the voice acting from Kevin Hart and Thomas Middleditch, the true hero of Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie has to be director David Soren. Soren takes the hugely popular children’s books from author Dav Pilkey and creates an inviting world full of wit and sly nods to our own society, leaving plenty of room for wickedly funny fart jokes. And there’s no room for ANY shame over its laughter in this wild adventure.

Produced by DreamWorks Animation and Scholastic Entertainment, Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie features a dizzy array of delights with animation production provided by Mikros Image Montreal. Combine all those visual champions with the sharp sense of humor from screenwriter Nicholas Stoller (Forgetting Sarah Marshall) and you have a crowd-pleasing debut of a superhero who wears underwear up to his armpits, wraps a curtain around his neck, and battles gigantic toilet bowls.

Besties George (Hart) and Harold (Middleditch) are in for a rather rude awakening one day when their miserable school principal Mr. Krupp (Ed Helms), threatens to separate the burgeoning comic book writers for the rest of the year, due to their unwillingness to play by the rules of society. No fart jokes. No poopy pants gangs. And absolutely no fun allowed. He even goes so far as to ban their comic book creation of – “Tra-la-la!” – Captain Underpants.

The boys aren’t having it, though. With the help of hypnotizing ring found as a prize in a cereal box, the boys hypnotize their principal into believing that he actually is the tighty whitie-wearing crusader of flatulence. The chaos in the wake of the hypnotizing session soon spirals out of control and, while the boys can control their effect upon the principal, they soon find – due to the arrival of the new (and humorless) science teacher, Professor Pee-Pee Diarrheastein Poopypants, Esq. (Nick Kroll) – that their creation is definitely needed to protect the school.

Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie makes a joyful noise indeed. Who cares if it with a whoopee cushion! Sure, it is filled with crude jokes about what our bodies do and the noises they make while doing it but, as one joke takes the ENTIRE movie to finally pay off, this isn’t just mindless entertainment for the youngsters to lose their minds to. No, much of the cinematic arrival of this stretched-out superhero is for those wise enough to laugh at what the rest of civilization deems tasteless.

And I choose to do it with a big FAT smile on my face. Captain Underpants is a godsend that the children (and adults) of this world desperately need.

This is one to own, folks.  DreamWorks Animation’s 1080p/AVC-encoded presentation is a striking release; full of vibrant colors and dark tones that simply rock the blu-ray experience.  This transfer is up to the usual animated standards but goes further into its detailed expression of colorful environments that are loaded with imagination and copious amounts of details.  Every bit of element is here.  In a word: Captain Underpants and its transfer is AMAZING.  The audio is also a powerful experience for the senses.  Presented in a clear DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 surround track, the score and other effects are things of beauty.
