Ghostbusters 1 & 2 Steelbook

Die-hard Ghostbusters fans, rejoice!  What’s old NEVER goes out of style.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has done us a solid with their handling of the classic two films in the Ghostbusters franchise.  That’s right, the original team – comprising of Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Sigourney Weaver, Harold Ramis, Ernie Hudson, Annie Potts, and Rick Moranis – is back to take on the ghosts and the slime once again.  I couldn’t be happier.  Joining their reassemble, as you can see by the cover art, is the original RCA/Columbia Home Video packaging from 1985 for this LIMITED EDITION steelbook release.

Your mouths are watering already, I can tell.  But, wait, it gets better.  Not only do we get to see the ghostbusting antics of Peter Venkman (Murray), Ray Stantz (Aykroyd), Spengler (Ramis) and Zeddemore (Ernie Hudson) perform EXPENSIVE ghost removal services once again, but there’s the above-bed floating Dana Barrett (Weaver), the dog-turning howl of Louis Tully (Rick Moranis), and Janine Melnitz (Potts), too.  And it is all in stunning Ultra HD video presentations, preserving the filmic look of the original releases with NEW Dolby Atmos surround mixes, too.

Yes, this is a re-release of the 2016 Ultra-HD 4K transfers, but – after getting a read of what the fans of the franchise really want – Sony has upgraded the release to include an all-new BONUS disc of supplemental material, including never-before-seen deleted scenes from the first film.    With hours of bonus features, this release – no matter if you already own the 2016 4K transfers or not – is DEFINITELY something you are going to want to get your hands on.

Directed and produced by Ivan Reitman and written by Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis, these two films – regardless of your feelings on the second one (which is SLOWLY gaining some much-needed respect in recent years) – are classics in American Cinema.  The first one defined my childhood and, later in my early teens, the second one reminded me of the joy I’d forgotten inherent in these characters.

You can read our original review on the 4K transfers here.
