Gas Pump Girls - Blu-ray

Fill ‘er up, Joe, the Gas Pump Girls are back in action doing what they do best.  Service with a smile!

Welcome back to Hometown High!  Fresh faces!  Moral fortitude!  And, obviously, lots and lots of sexually repressed shenanigans . . . and only one musical number.  Outside of a gas station, actress Kirsten Baker (as June, who inherits the gas station) sings her beyond catchy song and gets all the boys in the mood to be turned on by girls (in short-shorts and cut off tees) pumping gas.

"This harmless movie, along with Incoming Freshman and H.O.T.S., helped to usher in an era of audience-approved sex comedies in the 1980s."

Describing to us how to fill up a car: (1) grab it, (2) stick it in, (3) squeeze it, and (4) let it peter out, the damn comedy works!  Gas Pump Girls gives new meaning to the local “Body Shop” and, trust me, you won’t mind the reference or the curves or all the gear shift jokes that run rampant through director Joel Bender’s flick.  Love is a gas, after all!

We just have to survive a whole lot of jokes about ball joints and one dull graduation ceremony.  Because, when six recent female graduates inherit a gas station, the tables turn and all hell breaks loose as they turn Joe’s Super Duper Station into the hottest place in town.  The babes know exactly what the boys want and when they use their charms to attract customers, well, we have the birth of the sex comedy.  And it is all thanks to the success of these Gas Pump Girls.

The comedy, full of lots of raunchy T&A-laced humor, is framed around some fairly obvious references – comments like “Would you like a tiger in your tank?” – but, from the slapstick (thanks to comedy veterans like Huntz Hall, Joe E. Ross from Car 54, Where are You?, and Mike Mazurki) to the joyous sex-capades, this cheap flick, starring works to create a madcap midnight matinee cult charmer that is a definite must-see now that Scorpion Releasing has issued it on blu-ray through Ronin Flix. {googleads}

This harmless movie, along with Incoming Freshman and H.O.T.S., helped to usher in an era of audience-approved sex comedies in the 1980s.  The film – and all its raunchy car references – creates a comedy that provides sustainable laughs (especially when the PA system comes alive with a whole lot of female coos and come-ons to all the drivers in the area) as their business triples in just a few short hours of the girls realizing just what it is that the customers really want.

Along with Baker, the film stars Sandy Johnson, Leslie King, Linda Lawrence, and Rikki Marin as our gas station attendants.  And, boy, do they do it all.  And I do mean EVERYTHING and EVERYONE as they enter a customer competition with the rival gas station owned by Mr. Friendly (Dave Shelley), who plots against them. Gas Pump Girls - Blu-ray

From greasers to geeks, Gas Pump Girls offers all sorts of hijinks and hilarity as they wind up duking it out with more than just their competitors.  The Vultures are bikers that aren’t to be messed with.  Hell, they even have a threatening pose they perform after their name is called.  But when the girls figure out how to get them on their side, they suddenly have a new friend in the battle against Mr. Friendly and his mobsters.

Don’t hit the brakes, fellas, the Gas Pumps Girls are right around the corner!

Presented in a crisp 1080p transfer, the new scan of the original film elements is a thing of pristine beauty.  The film is dominated with reds and greens that absolutely burst with color.  It’s a cheap film, for sure, but the simple backgrounds burst with new details and a nice level of clarity.  Black levels are solid and skin tones are natural.  This is, after all, a dark film. There are lots of night scenes; thankfully, the lines hold their edges. Shadows are defined and the film has a new depth previously unseen.  Audio wise, the DTS-HD MA 2.0 mono soundtrack is clear and the dialogue is never lost or hard to hear.
