Deadpool 2 - Movie Review

5 starsIf ever there was a movie that encapsulated the phrase ‘good things come to those who wait’, it would be 2016’s Deadpool. This quirky, meta, R-rated breakout hit sat on actor Ryan Reynolds’ wish list for years and years. He was convinced the Marvel character of Deadpool, the Merc with the mouth, was the perfect marriage for him of irreverence and wit, something the man has proven time and again in multitudes of movies. But no one was biting. Up until Deadpool (and 2017’s IT) a film with a rating of R was risky business indeed, and none of the studios would take the gamble.

In a rare and fortuitous turn, some test footage was shot displaying what the actor and director Tim Miller had in mind, and although it didn’t move the money men, when it was leaked online, the people said, WE WANT THAT!

What eventuated became one of the most successful films of 2016, and a damn enjoyable ride to boot. Reynolds unhinged, uncensored performance is one of the finest examples of trusting a singular vision for a character that has ever been produced.

Cut to Deadpool 2. With the coin the first one raked in it was a foregone conclusion Fox would readily pony up the green for this one. Tim Miller, an equal collaborator to the success of the first film, exited early for the oft quoted ‘creative differences’. Ryan Reynolds became the leading custodian this time and employed John Wick director David Leitch to lens his manic encore.

"This film plays like a well-deserved, sky’s the limit, training wheels are off project for Ryan Reynolds to let fly with absolutely everything he’s got."

It doesn’t disappoint. The meta-metre has been dialled up to maximum, the in jokes, pop culture references, and fourth wall destruction comes thick and fast from the first frame. Nothing is sacred and Reynolds leads the charge into taking the piss out of everyone, everything, and every super hero trope there is. His swipes at himself and previous films from his back catalogue are particularly well-times and hilarious.

Emotion and relatability are not sacrificed. Deadpool and the other characters are put through some weighty stuff. The fact that this insane combination works is a testament to the focus and performances of all the players, especially their lead.

This reviewer laughed even harder in this one, than he did the last. The film’s plot is thinner and slightly predictable, but I doubt anyone will care. Your sides will be split by the time you reach the also hilarious credits. It’s just another thriller, laugh a moment, ride that holds your attention from start to finish.

The effects and action set pieces are as bonkers and impressive as the rest of it. Sadly a stunt woman was killed during the making of this movie, but, if there is a silver lining, the sheer level off spectacle on display is testament to all the stunt people who pulled this off, including the late  Joi "SJ" Harris.

This film plays like a well-deserved, sky’s the limit, training wheels are off project for Ryan Reynolds to let fly with absolutely everything he’s got. His passion and dedication for this character and the joy he brings to performing him is in every frame.

Absolutely spectacular sequel, as good, or maybe even better, than the first one. I would give it 6 out of 5 if allowed.
