Cut-Throats Nine (1972) - Blu-ray Review

5 beers

When the Italians go dark with their westerns, there’s no room for heroes. That’s what happens in Cut-Throats Nine, a serious-minded spaghetti western that is more Tarantino than the man himself. It is disturbed, gory, and twisted as hell and it tells one hell of a story about seven ruthless criminals and the two people, an officer and his daughter, who have to transport them about 500 miles to their own funeral.

You guessed it; this film is a brutal trashterpiece of filth and fury. There are a million things that go wrong in this epic journey. It begins to go bad when their stagecoach flips and continues to sour as the criminals manipulate, connive, and cheat their way to the gallows. These gruesome offenders – actors Rafael Hernandez, Ricardo Diaz, Carlos Romero Marchent, Antonio Iranzo, Alberto Dalbes, Jose Manuel Martin, Manuel Tejada – lust for blood like few others. They are barely human, matching the rugged terrain with a furiousness that is damn disarming.

"Horror comes to the snowy hills of the Wild West in Cut-Throats Nine, a gooey slice of Eurotrash SINema at its filthiest."

Directed by Joaquin Romero Marchent, Cut-Throats Nine is unforgettable and shocking as the western gets deconstructed and demoralized thanks to a cast of cretins. It arrives on blu-ray thanks to a brand-new HD scan of the original interpositive from Code Red. {googleads}

Each of these men have a story. And, thanks to Marchent’s unflinching camera, we get to see their story and the consequences that fall in step behind their own foolishness as they are ambushed by foolhardy thieves believing the escorted wagon to be carrying gold and, because even their guide across the snow-covered mountains has an ulterior motive: one of these smelly assholes killed his wife.

These seven men are without principles and, when faced with the inner strength of Robert Hundar as Sergeant Brown and the beauty of Emma Cohen as his daughter Cathy, well, there’s going to be righteous feud that doesn’t shy away from bullets to the back of the head, gnarly maiming, bodies being burned alive, beheadings, and rape. They even try to double-cross one another. The point is that they are all corpse grinders and their particular breed of violence is the kind that leaves lasting scars on an entire country.

Cut-Throats Nine (1972) - Blu-ray Review

Reflecting the violence present throughout the world thanks to the ongoing Vietnam conflict, it is no wonder then that this western is like one long bloody purging of all unclean things. It is reflective of a lot of different aspects of war and the types of people that war spits out. There is nothing clean about this movie. No comedy. No saloon girls. And no one named Cookie. These guys don’t trust each other, let alone themselves. And it shows; even the dialogue is rich as it explores characters and intent in strong and various ways.

I won’t tell you to forget about Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight. All I will do is tell you that the seeds to that picture are planted all right here, down to the richness in the score and the dialogue. This film is bleak, making The Wild Bunch look like a damn parade of clowns and trick horses, and it is as captivating as it is disturbing. Once you start watching, there is no safe place to hide.

Horror comes to the snowy hills of the Wild West in Cut-Throats Nine, a gooey slice of Eurotrash SINema at its filthiest.

Code Red presents this 2015 HD upgrade with a 1.78:1 aspect ratio. The results in this bloody feast are full of crisp details and solid black levels. There is the occasional print damage of dirt and debris, but overall, this is a solid release of a seriously great flick. There is, in some certain location shoots, a heavy layer of grain. Now, this doesn’t bother me. I like grain. Grain works, but if you are expecting a low budget knockoff to look better some number of years AFTER its release date, then you will be disappointed. This isn’t a restoration. It simply is what it is. Interiors are good, but details aren’t as graphic as they could be. Black levels are good, but never impressive. The DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 is adequate for the release.
