The Meg

The prehistoric shark thriller The Meg, starring Jason Statham took a big bite out of the weekend box office with a $44.5 million haul while subsequently knocking Tom Cruise's sixth venture into the Mission: Impossible franchise, Mission: Impossible - Fallout, from its three-week stranglehold on top spot. Fallout still earned a very respectable $20 million in 2nd place. {googleads}

Spike Lee's biggest opening weekend in ten years BlacKkKlansman, opened in fifth place with nearly $8 million, just behind Ewan McGregor's Christopher Robin and the teen horror Slender Man which earned $12 mill and $11.3 mill respectively.

The top ten spots were rounded out by Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, The Equalizer 2, Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation, followed by Marvel's super-hero actioner Ant-Man and the Wasp.

Sadly, Ken Marino's furry-faced love letter to dogs everywhere, Dog Days, failed to crack the top 10.

There's no reason to believe that The Meg won't maintain its hold on the top spot again next week when Hollywood pulls back on their release schedule with only two features getting wide releases Crazy Rich Asians, the ice age story Alpha, and Mark Wahlberg's espionage thriller Mile 22.
