Bloodshot

I’m just going to cut to the chase with this review.  Bloodshot is NOT a bad movie.  It might look familiar to comic book enthusiasts, but it is cool enough in its cinematic glide to deliver plenty of steely-eyed action scenes and incredible visuals thanks to first-time director David S.F. Wilson’s background in effects.

"ambitious in its design and well-aware of what it is while it ticks along with one genre nod after another"

Not to mention a sure-footed performance from Vin Diesel as an enhanced killer going from target to target as if he’s simply chewing bubblegum.  After years in the Fast and Furious franchise, it's good to see him work his charisma in new ways . . . as a superhero with a serious upgrade.

Sure, Bloodshot might seem familiar with its Matrix-like manipulations and its Fast and Furious team-building ways, but that’s a large part of the original comic book’s DNA and, as Vin Diesel starts slamming through punching bags and concrete barriers, those familiar threads make Bloodshot click together in a succinct and FUN way.

Seeing an unstoppable Vin Diesel, or more like Vin Diesel’s turn at playing The Rock, is part of the fun as his reality gets twisted thanks to so hardcore virtual rewiring of the world he thought he knew.. {googleads}

Based on the Valiant Comics character who first appeared in 1992, Bloodshot is the story of U.S. Marine, Ray Garrison (Diesel) and his return to life after being killed by the Mad-as-a-Hatter dancing antics of Martin Axe (Tony Kebbell), who knows how to enter a meat locker.  It seems the bad guys have won . . . momentarily.

When Garrison is brought back on-line, thanks to the enhanced nanotechnology circulating through his body, the memories of his former life and his former wife come flooding back.  He knows he has to take revenge on the psycho killer who killed his wife and, eventually, him.  Nothing is going to stop him.  Not even the new team of enhanced beings around him or the suspiciously polished niceties of Dr. Emil Harting (Guy Pearce) can slow him down.  Garrison wants cold-blooded revenge.

And, after a seriously GREAT action sequence (made all the more insane by a truckload of flour), we discover that Garrison has been turned into a specific killing machine.  Shut him down.  Bring him back on-line.  Give him new memories, complete with a new bad guy to go after.Bloodshot

So whose bidding is this super soldier doing?  It certainly isn’t his own.  As Garrison starts out on another revenge mission, he discovers that he IS the conspiracy he’s chasing and, thus, his unwinding and rebooting begins.

Co-starring Sam Heughan as another soldier with metallic limbs, Eiza González who quickly moves to Garrison’s side, and Lamorne Morris, who damn near steals the show as genius coder Wilfred Wigans, Bloodshot is ambitious in its design and well-aware of what it is while it ticks along with one genre nod after another.    Ignore the mainstream critics on this one, Bloodshot takes dead aim at entertainment and nails it.

Based on the bestselling comic book, Vin Diesel stars as Ray Garrison, a soldier recently killed in action and brought back to life as the superhero Bloodshot by the RST corporation. With an army of nanotechnology in his veins, he's an unstoppable force –stronger than ever and able to heal instantly. But in controlling his body, the company has sway over his mind and memories, too. Now, Ray doesn't know what's real and what's not – but he's on a mission to find out.  Sony Pictures Home Entertainment will release on 4K Blu-ray and Blu-ray Dave Wilson's action thriller Bloodshot, starring Vin Diesel, Eiza Gonzalez, Sam Heughan, Toby Kebbell, and Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson.

Video:

Sony Pictures presents Bloodshot on blu-ray with a 1080p transfer that has very strong results.  The 2.39:1 aspect ratio preserves its cinematic look as Vin Diesel smashed through concrete columns and beyond.  Black levels are solid and whites are crisp.. Much of the film is captured in low light situations and I’m happy to report that the black levels remain well-defined throughout.  Location shoots are captured with great detail and there are no moments of unfortunate crush when the levels switch.  Textures are good.  Colors are striking.  This is a dazzling blu-ray.

Audio:

A powerful Dolby Atmos audio track carries the film’s dialogue, soundtrack, and effects.  Be warned because this movie gets loud with thunderous bullets and explosions galore.
