Battle in Space: The Armada Attacks

Don’t walk into this science fiction flick unprepared.  That’s my first warning because you might see Doug Jones’ name on the trailers and be all ready for some creepy space aliens that only he can bring to life, but - no - it’s SPACE WIZARDS instead!  Space Wizards?  Yes, sir.  Spppppaaaaaaacccccceeeeeeeee wizards . . .

Alright, like you, my head is buzzing with what this might mean to a film entitled Battle in Space: The Armada Attacks. Could this mean that we have a B-minded space age flick that is unintentionally funny as its cast - which includes Andrew Troy, Cathleen Mason, Declan Churchill Carter, Tom Farrah, Jess Gabor, Trip Hope, and Mia Lardne - react to Jones as a ferocious space wizard . . . sport of.

The frame for this collection of science fiction-minded shorts is fairly straightforward.  In 2420, after aliens and powerful space wizards have enslaved human villages, a group of resistance fighters organize a counterattack against their alien overlords and launch an armada of spacecraft in a battle for supremacy in space.  So, yeah, Jones is in it for something like 2-minutes while we get unconnected vignettes set in this vignette.Battle in Space: The Armada Attacks

With sci-fi shorts directed by Andrew Jaksch, Lukas Kendall, Toby Rawal, Scott Robson, Sanjay F. Sharma, and Luis Tinoco, Battle in Space is unsurprisingly routine.  Nothing particularly stands out as these shorts go about their brief running time squeezing every bit of their budget into visuals as an ex-cop looks for his missing daughter, the stealing of a crystal is planned, some astronauts have fun with a psychically linked planet, alien bonding, and a female pilot who is escaping the fleet . . . which, quite honestly, works because whoever assembled these shorts into one movie knew to save the best for the last and “The Caronte” is by far the best story in this collection.

Battle in Space: The Armada Attacks is not recommended for the casual film-goer.  It will be dismissed without even giving this showcase of new talent a chance.  There are some good ideas buried in this bundle and, perhaps, they will be mined again at a later date.  While Uncork’d Entertainment is handling the film’s release to streaming platforms everywhere, Battle in Space: The Armada Attacks is non-essential viewing best appreciated by those who dig getting glimpses at some up-and-coming new talent . . . even if it does have a SPPPPPPAAAACCCCCCCEEEEE Wizard in it.

It is now streaming.
