Night of the Sorcerors/The Loreley's Grasp - Blu-ray Review

4 beersMy brothers and sisters of slasher cinema, we are surrounded by bad news when it comes to global issues.  Forget about North Korea for a couple of hours.  Dump the Trump.  The only bit of decent news on the bullhorn today is the arrival of this blu-ray release from the fine fiends over at Scream Factory.  I mean, talk about straw men….hell, there's plenty here wearing masks.

We are headed back to the Drive-Ins, comrades!  I wonder if this movie, Night of the Sorcerers, is where the idea for Chris Isaak’s “Wicked Game” video idea came about; so much nakedness rolling about in a wide, wide river.  It can’t be good for the complexion.  But, honestly, who gives a fuck about all that nonsense when you have a very much dead corpse rising from below a pile of bricks and rocks and other things that should be impossible for a burned-out vampire to do.

Scream Factory soldiers on with their double feature blu-ray titles.  It feels like it’s been a couple of months (or more!!!) since last we saw a Double Feature release from them.  I am more than pleased to see the product line continue as my exploitation needs are unending.  Their latest twofer offering contains two of Spanish horror film director Amando de Ossorio’s essential calling cards of exploitation and sensationalism: Night of the Sorcerers and The Loreley’s Grasp

In Night of the Sorcerers, we explore present day (of 1974, that is) Bumbasa as we come face to face with a missionary turned vampire and her wickedly long canine teeth.  Nom nom nom.  I never knew a voodoo cult lusted so damn hard for the innards of headless women.  How again are they turned into vampires with their heads whacked off?  Oh, who the fuck cares.  It’s awesome.

In The Loreley’s Grasp, the supple female flesh on display continues as we take a nosedive straight into the Rhine River in Germany in search of a legendary reptile-like creature that tears out the hearts of all its victims when the moon is full.  Sign me up!  When it was shown here in America, it was issued with vomit bags.  Whether that was for the gore or the shakiness of the POV shoot is still debated to this day.  Regardless, it’s pretty severe as a caped monster (a sweet Helga Liné) roams the halls (and swimming pool!!!) of an all-girl school.

So neither one of these flicks are on the same level as Ossorio’s Tombs of the Blind Dead, Demon Witch Child, and The Ghost Galleon but, honestly, they move at such a quick (and much appreciated) step that you can’t help but smile and nod.  Watching these two flicks is done with a “thumbs up” to the television screen and a big ol’ grin as you gulp down your pints of beer.

I’m not going to lie to you.  These horror titles are probably the best examples of European trash cinema that you can pick up for under 20 bucks.  Flesh for fantasy, man.  Boobs, blondes, and blood so icky-sticky it’ll make you giggle.  And the men in these films are probably arm wrestling champions of every single viper den within a three-mile radius.  I guess that’s why the women fight over who fucks them on an almost nightly basis.

Gentlemen, when the screaming stops, how do you prefer your blondes? With or without their heads?  I mean, clothes!?  Errr….

Retaining the grain and grit of its low budget, Scream Factory presents both of these sexy Spanish films on blu-ray with a new 1080P transfer with varying aspect ratios (1.33:1, 1.85:1). Low lighting rules throughout these features but in spite of its technical limitations, there is a solid contrast and the colors appear brighter than on the poor quality DVD releases before. Skin tones are solid and the details in some of the period clothing. While there is ZERO depth to many of the shots and dirt and some scratches still pop up, beheaded babes have never looked better. The DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 is perfectly suited for home viewing.
