The Slasher (1972) - Blu-ray

3 beersEveryone is unfaithful.  That seems to be the thesis in this infamous giallo film.  Hell, when the women are this beautiful – Susan Scott anyone? – I don’t even care if 70% of the film is merely bedroom glimpses by a lanky stranger in a black trench coat.  This murderous romp is for the scum in us all.

So Sweet, So Dead a.k.a. The Slasher ...is the Sex Maniac! lives again with this exclusive release through Diabolik DVD.

The click of the Ricoh camera is a dead giveaway.  The high fashion is another.  And the women.  Oh so snazzy and supple.  The cast is full of thunderous beauty: Sylva Koscina, Annabella Incontrera, Krista Nell, and Femi Benussi to name but a few of the actresses caught in the lens of this murder mystery.  But, for me, it is Susan Scott who seals the deal on this one.

The Italians really can pick them.  Leave it then to director Roberto Bianchi Montero (Eye of the Spider) to exploit their form in almost every scene (including backgrounds) and then surround them with a bunch of certifiable carnival freaks.  Impotent men be warned, actor Silvano Tranquilli as Paolo Santangeli is right on your heels.  Surely all the murders of these beautiful women are related.  And, as a lawyer, he knows all the right questions to ask.

So Sweet So Dead, complete with a brand new HD scan with extensive color corrections, has arrived on blu-ray thanks to efforts of Code Red.  And its camera takes in all the eye candy and the necking as one black-cloaked serial killer photographs and then kills, kills, kills his way to the very to the very tippy top of the food chain.  Sure, the men get a clean getaway, but this only adds to the case against the killer.

You are all sinners!  Blouses and pants drop as soon as doors are closed or young adults are in cars.  And there’s always a camera clicking away at the spicy moments between an unfaithful man and woman.  And then throats are slashed.

With composer Giorgio Gaslini’s sometimes lush and sometimes jazzy score guiding the killer’s hand on screen, we are quite easily swept up in the action as Inspector Capuana (Farley Granger) makes his rounds, trying to understand the madness behind why a killer would leave photographs of the kills with the men always scratched out.  A misogynist through and through?  Or is this cloaked figure actually a woman?

Hilariously enough, this film was re-edited at some point in its history with actual porno bits and released as Penetration.  It was allowed to exist until actor Granger, who was still in the re-edited porno, had to step in.  That’s how low this giallo goes when it comes to the treatment of women.

The giallo has been done better, but this is a good start.  Moral opportunists rule after all.  So Sweet, So Dead has found itself on blu-ray thanks to Code Red.

The brand new HD scan is made all the sweeter by the color corrections made to the transfer.  The details are bursting with vibrancy and the set design is as luscious as it is alluring.  There’s a lot of sex to be had in this picture and the skin tones are perfectly pleasurable.  City streets are crisp and the warmer tones are saturated nicely.  There are a few instances of scratches and debris, but mostly the transfer is clean.  Code Red presents the film with a 1.78:1 aspect ratio and features a DTS-HD MA mono soundtrack.
