Night Angel (1990) - Blu-ray Review

2 beersModel-turned-actress Isa Jank (Forbidden Love), with her stunning looks, is good at getting attention.  The camera, at one time, really loved lingering on her high cheek-boned ways.  Considered hot property by the late 1980s, she was pretty much leveled to a pillar of ash by the poor returns of Night Angel, a b-movie that loses more than its way in the course of 90-minutes.

While it seemed only appropriate to cast her as a demonic temptress in a horror/slasher flick when the horror genre was gaining steam, Night Angel just doesn’t keep itself that interested in her nocturnal shenanigans and goes off the deep end exploring side stories that are far less interesting.  And so our little minx suffers a quick cinematic expiration date.

Night Angel just doesn’t know what to do with its wings.  And it is, as an audience member, truly hard to gain sympathy when your victims are all in the fashion industry; these hustlers deserve their just deserts.  They are snots, all of them, and pretty much deserve the fate they are handed as this ancient succubus – the one and only Lilith – crawls from out of the earth’s innards to suck on more than just what is dangling between their legs.

It’s their blood she’s after.    And, if allowed, she will kill them all.  But, first, she will dance the night away before luring you to your doom.

Whether by elevator or by screwing, you are going to die once she has your attention.  Co-starring Linden Ashby, Debra Feuer, Helen Martin, Doug Jones (one of the only times to see this guy free of prosthetics), and Gary Hudson, Night Angel is good for a laugh … or two, but nothing much more than that.

Unfortunately, the movie never gets as good as its opening in which Lilith seduces a man with his wife lying next to him and then, because the wife wakes up to the sounds of their lovemaking, proceeds to cut her throat with a fingernail, fish through the man she’s riding innards, and then go and cut up the boy she furiously sent to his room

Director Dominique Othenin-Girard (Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers), outside of a few choice sequences involving Jank crawling around on all fours in the mud, just gives us a very routine flick.  And, truthfully, Night Angel is not a very good movie.  No matter what scale you use, this film just lies still for a large part of its running time.

If you choose to watch Night Angel, with its big shoulder pads and even bigger hair, you’ll wind up mourning more than just the passing of some really bad fashion.  It is now available on Blu-ray thanks to Kino Lorber Studio Classics.

Kino Lorber Studio Classics presents Night Angel on Blu-ray thanks to an expressive HD transfer.  It is presented with a new 2K HD transfer that is presented with a 1.85:1 aspect ratio and an English 2.0 mono track.  While there is an age to the sheen on the film, this is the absolute best the film has ever looked.  Details are crisp – especially the video store – and colors look sharp.  Black levels are deep and solid.  And the L.A. streets are sick with rain and neon.
