All Hail the Popcorn King

“Hallowed be thy name, oh Lord, and shotgun do your stuff!”

In which the most well-known unknown author steps into the limelight!  For ANYONE interested in genre writing, Texas history, and Joe R. Lansdale, All Hail the Popcorn King is the documentary for you.

"fun in its appreciation of pulp fiction as an award-winning author and screenwriter is celebrated"

Texas writer Joe R. Lansdale, who's written over 50 novels and 500 short stories including Bubba Ho-Tep, Cold in July, The Drive-in, the Hap & Leonard series, is a genre unto himself.  He embraces the unexpected.  With a knack of never pigeonholing himself or his art - having tackled a variety of genres, including comic books and animation with scripts for Batman: The Animated Series under his belt - Lansdale is a good choice for the subject of All Hail the Popcorn King.  It truly is a fascinating watch.

That is why an independent filmmaker, Hansi Oppenheimer, CEO of The Squee Project, a media network supporting representation, feminism & diversity in pop culture, has made a documentary with Lansdale at its center.  She’s produced the fan-centric creative event SqueeCon 12/18, produces a podcast, The Grr in Fangrrl on semi-regular basis on BlockTalkRadio, and is currently promoting this documentary.

Lansdale, who makes for an awesome and authentic subject as he’s interviewed from the oldest town in Texas, definitely knows his stuff and waxes poetic about Texas history, Nacogdoches, comic books, and the discovery of reading Edgar Rice Burroughs.  Those other worlds that writers like Burroughs and Lovecraft created?  Yeah, they inspired him to write for himself, feeding a need he had at a young age and it’s fascinating to hear him relay their influence upon him.All Hail the Popcorn King

Lansdale, also a Master in Martial Arts (with his own technique), discusses in front of the camera the effect of growing up with a Honky Tonk and a Drive-In Theater just over the hill.  In fact, as he describes it, he could see the Drive-In screens from his house.  He couldn’t hear a thing, mind you, but the visuals were there and they, along with the racism at the time, formed his consciousness.  And all of that formed his policies as a liberal guy surrounded by conservatives.  Call him The Lone Ranger of East Texas.

With NEW and candid interviews from Bruce Campbell, James Purefoy, Joe Hill, Don Coscarelli, Mick Garris, Amber Benson, novelist David J. Schow, former Fangoria editor Tony Timpone, and others, All Hail the Popcorn King touches on all aspects of Lansdale’s artistry and personality, making this documentary a sweet ride through his life, his writings, and his beliefs.  The writing, stories, and genre ideas of Lansdale are discussed, his social ideas parceled out, and his successes celebrated for over 50-minutes.

All Hail the Popcorn King is fun in its appreciation of pulp fiction as an award-winning author and screenwriter is celebrated. It’s fast, too, never pausing for too long on one particular interviewee. And the whole of it works to create a very thoughtful and unexpected look at the most well-known unknown author of the modern era.

At present, All Hail the Popcorn King has been touring the country along with Oppenheimer and will be released wider over the coming months with publicity handled by October Coast.
